Happy 87th Birthday Masahiro Shinoda !!!
篠田 正浩 was born March 9, 1931 in Gifu, Japan
Thanks for everything, so far...
Masahiro Shinoda came to prominence as part of the Japanese New Wave directors in the 1960s alongside Nagisa Ōshima and Yoshishige Yoshida.
Winner of the Berlin Silver Bear for Gonza the Spearman (近松門左衛門 鑓の権三) for "For its harmonic composition" 1986.
His focus on youth and the cultural and political turmoil of 1960s Japan made him a central figure in the Shōchiku New Wave alongside Nagisa Ōshima and Yoshishige Yoshida. He worked in a variety of genres, from the yakuza film Pale Flower to the samurai film Assassination, but he particularly became known for his focus on socially marginal characters and for an interest in traditional Japanese theater, which found its greatest expression in Double Suicide, in which actors are manipulated like Bunraku puppets.
Directorial debut with 恋の片道切符 (One Way Ticket for Love) 1960, the movie was actually inspired by the Neil Sedaka song "One Way Ticket," a huge hit in Japan in 1959.
乾いた花 (Pale Flower) 1964, "A gangster gets released from prison and has to cope with the recent shifts of power between the gangs, while taking care of a thrill-seeking young woman, who got in bad company while gambling".
暗殺 (Assassimation) 1964, "In 1863, when Americans warships approach Japan, a enigmatic ronin becomes a important figure in a complex game of power between the Shogunate and the empire"
心中天網島 (Double Suicide) 1969, "A doomed love between a paper merchant and a courtesan".
はなれ瞽女おりん (Ballad of Orin) 1977, "A blind traveling musician is abused and oppressed while she tours the country, even though the modern world imposes changes on people's behavior"
瀬戸内少年野球団 (MacArthur's Children) 1984, "In this drama at the end of World War II, the inhabitants of a small Japanese fishing village must come to terms with their nation's defeat and the sudden occupation of General MacArthur and his troops".
近松門左衛門 鑓の権三 (Gonza the Spearman) 1986, "The tragic story of Gonza, a handsome ladies man, set in the Tokagawa Period, a time in which appearences are very important. Gonza competes with Bannojo for the honor to perform the tea ceremony to celebrate the birth of an heir to the lord of their clan. To see the sacred tea scrolls Gonza promises to marry the daughter of the family which possesses them, even though he is unofficially engaged to another. When studying the scrolls with Osai, the mother of the house, Bannajo sneaks into the house and steals their obis and runs through the town proclaiming the two as adulterers".
スパイ・ゾルゲ (Spy Sorge) 2003, is Masahiro Shinoda's latest movie to date, about the Soviet spy Richard Sorge. It was a Japanese-German co-production.
Masahiro Shinoda has so far directed 30 movies, including the 1972 official documentary of the Sapporo Olympics.
