And so the legend continues ...
We were wondering over on IMDb exactly when on Monday, Feb.20th the axe would fall. Turns out it was 12:01 a.m. GMT, or 7:01p.m. EST on Sunday, Feb. 19th in North America. I was cut off in mid-sentence.
P.S. This site doesn't seem to be threaded. Any way to fix this?

That imdb staffer was actually wrong, as the questioner--per that screenshot--actually asked about a WW2 bomber that crashed in a "dessert", not a desert. I'm thinking some sort of giant cake perhaps.

Sole Survivor, 1970, made for tv Better than "Flight of the Phoenix."

I just had a bizarre thought:
If Andrew Lloyd Webber were to turn "Sole Survivor" into a Broadway musical, would everyone who sees it realize that the ghosts of the WWII bomber knew they were ghosts all along, or would there still be pathetic nitwits who will insist that they didn't know they were ghosts until their bodies were found and bagged up?

Sole Survivor belongs to a group of made for TV movies from the early to mid 70s. People could remember the basics of the plots, but never the movie's title, or much else. The story goes something like this. In 1966, the TV networks went full color, which increased production costs. Meanwhile, the movie studios, still not quite in bed with the networks, noticed that when a big movie premiered on TV it pulled big ratings, and good profits for the networks. The studios decided to increase the amount paid for first run movies. The networks balked, and instead decided to create their own "made for TV" movies. Made for TV movies weren't a new idea, but now they had a bigger financial incentive to crank up production. Besides Sole Survivor, the made for TV movies from that time period most asked about on the IMDb were: Scientists experiment with monkeys in Arctic laboratory ... It's "A Cold Night's Death" (1973) www.imdb.com/title/tt0068390/combinedHuman looking aliens recognize each-other with special glasses (already mentioned in here by wmcclain) ... "The Love War" (1970) www.imdb.com/title/tt0066012/combinedWWII prisoners of war secretly build a glider ... "The Birdmen" (1971) www.imdb.com/title/tt0066833/combinedBoy hides in walls of house ... "Bad Ronald" (1974) www.imdb.com/title/tt0071186/combinedDamaged WWII fighter plane tries to evade a Nazi tank ... "Death Race" (1973) www.imdb.com/title/tt0069953/combinedAnd, the one everybody seemed to sorta (mis)remember: Woman fights with animated voodoo doll in her apartment ... This is Karen Black in the third segment of the anthology movie "Trilogy Of Terror" (1975) www.imdb.com/title/tt0073820/combined There were other more famous made for TV movies of the time, Duel, The Night Stalker, etc. but they had garnered enough recognition, and it was rare for anybody with fuzzy recollections to ask about them.

A rare credit for the great SF/fantasy author Jack Vance. Review and thumbnails: Bad Ronald (1974)

Jack Vance? I never imagined. (I have, at latest count, two dozen of his books, almost all gems ... love the man's writing. He had a good long career ... born in 1916.) I wonder if we'll ever see the "Demon Princes" novels made into movies?

Lots of fond memories when ABC premiered Movie Of The Week and the era of the "made for tv movie" really kicked off.

Ah one of the many old FAQs that made several rounds on the IMDb boards. One that was also often debated about as to what the real answer is.
That reminds me maybe there should be a repository for FAQs so when one of these questions pops up an in the know member can provide the link to the answer. Maybe even have a FAQ board that reoccurring questions could be moved to.

Ah, good to see the classic threads here. You forgot to mention that Wiliam Shatner was in it. William Shatner was in it.
