Shared accommodations can be used as a set up for comic situations as in Planes, Trains and Automobiles ('all know which scene !)
Total strangers share an apartment in 100% innocent sleeping arrangements~ from an era where it was not uncommon to "share". True Grit : Maddie sharing with the snoring old lady (image ?)
OK then, that's the general idea ~ fun stuff !

Caldicott and Charters are forced to share a room and bed in a crowded hotel in Hitchcock's The Lady Vanishes (1938). I'm sure that Hitch knew exactly what this looked like.

You know me: always going for the obvious. The Odd Couple (1968) "It's all over, Felix. The whole marriage. We're getting an annulment!"

A somewhat risqué, menage-a-trois the shared accommodation arrangement of Design for Living (1933) . The storyline was inspired by Noel Coward’s partially autobiographical stage play of the same name, but the film was completely rewritten, removing some of Cowards character ambiguity... What a great ending !....

Worth mentioning, even though a remake is already listed in the OP.

It's probably because I've never been much of a Jerry Lewis fan that Boeing, Boeing is the film I've most enjoyed him in: uncharacteristically subdued and standing mostly on the sidelines tossing out acerbic quips (with able assistance from Thelma Ritter) while a manic Tony Curtis dashes madly about, doing the heavy lifting.

Bells Are Ringing 1960 and Pillow Talk 1959, both had to do with shortage of Telephone lines, something the ipad generation has no clue whatever it is about, anyway do the comedy still work??

Masquerading as "Mr. and Mrs. Burns", strangers Jim (Herbert Marshall) & Joan (Jean Arthur) find themselves with a shared room one bed accommodation, in the delightful romantic comedy If You Could Only Cook (1935).

Dorothy Daindridge and Harry Belafonte are shown cohabitating w/o benefit of clergy in the Chicago section of Carmen Jones. I don't know how it got past the censors
Dorothy also lives with Sidney Poitier for awhile in Porgy and Bess.

This is the "Neil Simon Situation", where opposites are thrown together. Come Blow Your Horn, Barefoot In The Park, and The Goodbye Girl also use the same idea.

I know BATouttaheck mentioned it in the OP, but I’ve got to throw in another reference to the Boys… Stan, Ollie, and baby. Love it. Also… This isn’t the right scene, but there’s a great “unintentional shared accommodations” bit in the uproarious A Walk in the Woods (2015).

Never worry about things already mentioned ... plenty of room for all and sundry, the more the merrier etc !
As far as that goes ... no such thing as too many pictures of Stan and Ollie !
