The Diane seasons are the better ones for me. They have great comedy but also some genuine scenes of effective drama and some incredibly clever writing. Yes, Sam and Diane were wrong for each other but that's why it was so fascinating and fun. The first season cliffhanger when Sam and Diane finally kiss is remarkable. This is a series that basically hit the ground running and never really let up. However, there is no doubt that once Diane left the show the show itself became different. Still funny but not as compelling.
Seasons 1-5 I give a 9/10 Seasons 6-11 I give a 7/10
Overall a solid 8/10

I rated it equal to how much I enjoyed it. 1/10. Too harsh?

Really couldn't see the hype in this. All the pretty females were annoying. Only saving grace was Frasier and Lilith.

Started out strong, but the Sam-Diane thing was wearing thin by the end...Shelley Long leaving was needed.
Kirstie Alley breathed new life into the show, and it became more of an ensemble comedy after that.
For me, the "second act" of the show holds up better.
Diane years: 7/10 Rebecca years: 9/10

Completely forgot about her even getting together with Frasier let alone 'getting married" she stood him up really good to see her go.

I didn't hate her character, but by the end I was really tired of her. She'd become more of a caricature of her former self at that point, and was becoming more shrill than amusing. The animosity between her and Carla had also grown tiresome; I'm glad they didn't try to replicate that with Rebecca but instead made the two of them a sort of "cohorts in scheming"; but not totally without some friction thrown in occasionally.

Still funny but not as compelling. Agreed. I have season 4 on dvd, Woody's intro, my fav of the series. Sam & Diane while meant for one another, are individuals impossible of commitment... who just happened to have encountered one another in life's journey. I do btw count the S5 flashforward to them as seniors as canon. I've always thought they'd be eternally single because they can't handle mature adult relationships... so they'd end up back together common law couple maybe around age 60 together. S6+ Rebecca wasn't bad, yet the show really went all in with lesser, unwelcome for me, secondary characters like Paul, Robin, Kelly, & John from Melville's. The season arcs became eye rolling. Frasier also became insufferable. 8/10 overall. 9/10 S1-5 6/10 S6+ I know Diane's leaving left a huge void in the dynamic of the show, yet part of me also thinks ageing Diane with Sam on tv might've run outta steam quite quickly. I've read they would've been married & probably ended up apart before maybe reconciling by series end. 6 seasons of those angles might've been over saturation. As it is, their duo remains iconic in part of how they did end.

But the funniest episode is the one with John Cleese. Unfortunately I couldn't find any clips on Youtube.
