Yes, it is good. But I find the Debra character annoying.
She is a homicide detective who eventually becomes a homicide lieutenant. But she is constantly freaking out and overreacting emotionally and hysterically to murder. Why is she in homicide if she cannot handle murder?
And she curses so much that it sometimes unintelligible what she is saying. Not only is it unladylike. But it is immensely unprofessional. I don't believe she would be allowed to keep her job in real life.
I generally do not like nonsense and unrealism in fiction, unless it is supposed to be nonsensical and unrealistic. Homicide detectives who cannot handle murder makes no sense to me. Continually overacting emotionally to murder --- when that is supposed to be your job --- is just bad drama.

Debra is a psychologically and emotionally disturbed lunatic who makes everything she gets involved in worse for everybody.

That may be why I love her You are not alone. Quinn loves her. Dexter loves her. And I imagine Harrison loves her too.

Dexter probably good for first 5 seasons, skip the final season

I think the first season is the best. As for Deb, her over the top profanity bothers me not because it's unladylike (I wouldn't view a man cussing that much any differently), but because it just seems forced and attention needy.

But that sounds like a stock female cop/agent/whatever, alright. "She curses a lot which is not typical of women, which makes her badass! But also she's a wussy at her own job, cuz chicks, amiright?" Why can't female cops be portrayed as just cops who are female?

Dexter probably good for first 5 seasons, skip the final season I just finished all 8 seasons. I thought the first three were good. It got a little corny in the middle (around the time John Lithgow showed up.) And then it got good again. And the finale was a bit corny. But overall, I thought it was good.

But this is just a bad portrayal of a female cop.

I drove a truck for 20 years. I have heard some filthy language. But I have never heard anyone curse as much as this Debra. It is ridiculous.

This is just my personal preference. But I don't like these dark superheros with deep, heavy personal problems. If we are going fantasy (serial killer who only kills bad guys) might as well go all out right? I mean it is just fantasy.
SPOILERS; I would have preferred Debra never died, and Dexter got away to Argentina to meet up with Hannah and Harrison to live happily ever after. Except Dexter kept killing bad guys.

I think 4 was slightly overrated, but still in the top half. 5 was mostly good, 6 and 7 had great endings but also plenty of forgettable episodes. 8 is most people's least favorite for a reason.

But right about that, time I started seeing plenty of scenes where I couldn't help but think, "That is unrealistic. That would never happen. Yeah right . . ." Those types of unrealistic implausiblilities usually get to me. And generally speaking, the Lithgow killer was the first guy he started having trouble with. Dexter wasn't as efficient with him. That was a turnoff. And that was when it became apparent that Dexter's activities were having a negative affect on others. And I didn't like seeing Rita get killed. And, I would have to go back and watch it again. But probably the Debra character started imploding around that time. I never liked her. I think I really started getting tired of her around that time.

I did not mind season 5 too much, but then started HATING the show. So sad too as it was one of the best shows on TV for a few seasons. The final season was dreadful.

I think most people these days are too sophisticated to not notice implausiblilities like Dexter never getting caught by nosey neighbors, video cameras and computer searchers. There was constant suspicion of Dexter at work. If anybody had just searched his computers at work and at home, they would have seen millions of searches on the victims before Dexter killed them. And Dexter just walked up to people's homes and broke in. Nobody ever saw him breaking and entering. And nobody had video security. Even his rich and nefarious targets. That got old after while. Last but not least, bodies float in salt water. All of Dexter's victims sunk to the bottom of the ocean and stayed on the bottom. When he disposed of Debra's body, it was just like the end of Titanic. Bodies don't sink like that in salt water.

A show like Dexter doesn't need to be realistic in order to be entertaining.

A little implausiblility is easy to overlook. But when it becomes blatant and constant, it become harder and harder to accept. I think it just got worse and worse with Dexter. After while, it just becomes unacceptable and unable to be overlooked.

The first season is the same as the first book, then they went forward writing their own stuff. The Jimmy Smits season was boring, loved the Lithgow and Julia Stiles seasons. The series finale was not satisfying at all though.
