'Hobson's Choice' is a romantic comedy based on a play by Harold Brighouse. In Victorian England in 1880, proud shoe shop owner Henry Horatio Hobson (Charles Laughton) employs his three daughters Maggie (Brenda De Banzie), Alice (Daphne Anderson) and Vicky (Prunella Scales) without paying them. It starts to dawn on Henry that he may not be able to keep using his girls for much longer as the two youngest have respectable suitors, so he publicly denounces his eldest daughter Maggie in an effort to demoralise her and retain her services as a spinster. The spanner in the works is the real power behind Henry's business operations, professional bootmaker Willie Mossop (John Mills).
'Hobson's Choice' is based on a play written by Harold Brighouse who was a prominent member of the "Manchester School" of dramatists. Brighouse was from Eccles and David Lean's version of 'Hobson's Choice' is filmed in Salford. 'Hobson's Choice' is known as 'A Lancashire Comedy In 4 Acts'. The first adaptation was Percy Nash's silent film released in 1920. The original choice to play Henry Hobson in Lean's film was Mancunian Robert Donat who passed on the role due to health problems. This led to Charles Laughton being cast who was born in Scarborough, Yorkshire.

'Maybe not meteoric, but Rebecca Long-Bailey’s rise from relative obscurity to become Labour’s star in Salford and Eccles certainly seems quick. Inheriting a socialist legacy, her first job of today will be a visit to the city’s estate agents after she became an MP with a 12,541 majority. After successfully winning Hazel Blears’ old seat she reiterated her promise to move in to the city from Cheshire. Before high-flyer Blears made the Salford and Eccles constituency her own it was Labour elder statesman, Stan, later Lord Orme of Salford, who held the seat until 1997. But after the result was announced Rebecca promised she would be making it her own. She said: “I am so delighted and honoured to be voted as MP for Salford and Eccles, and am really excited to be starting my first five years in office. I will now be moving to Salford, and want to become part of the fabric of the community."

'Hobson's Choice' is an engaging social satire about hard times, changing values and family politics that's set during the years of The Long Depression. It's elegantly filmed by David Lean whose meticulous craftsmanship is something worth admiring. The characters are flawed but amiable, nice people to spend some time with, I think.
