Ideally I would have like to see Dexter get caught and sentenced to death, but I also wouldn't have minded him escaping with Hannah. Either way, I wanted his colleagues to find out who he really was. To be honest, I think they chose the absolute worst option to end the show. I agree. Any ending would have been better than what they chose.

This is just my personal preference. But I don't like these dark superheros with deep, heavy personal problems. If we are going fantasy (serial killer who only kills bad guys) might as well go all out right? I mean it is just fantasy. SPOILERS; I would have preferred Debra never died, and Dexter got away to Argentina to meet up with Hannah and Harrison to live happily ever after. Except Dexter kept killing bad guys. Do you think that would have been better? I would have liked your ending. But that's the problem the show had. Fans had countless preferences for how it "should have ended". Some, like us, wanted the happy ending for Dexter. He was the good guy to us. He made the world a better place. But then you have other people who wanted him to get killed. Others wanted him exposed and put in prison. So the writers couldn't win. No matter what they did, a significant portion of the fan base would swear they "got it wrong". Given that...I'm glad they went with the open ended ending. We can all write our own ending now. What ever you want to happen next can be true. I like to think Dexter figured something out and rejoined Harrison in Argentina. Most likely he continued to take out bad guys too. He appeared to have a real sense of justice that I doubt would just vanish. He's a better written Batman for me.

I don't know why anybody would hope for that. Hannah was an awful character. She was the antithesis of what Dexter was and it made no sense that he wanted to be with her. That is one of the biggest reasons the show dipped in quality. My understanding from the show was Hannah only killed bad guys who were victimizing her. With the exception of going after Debra. And obviously Hannah was good for Dexter and Harrison. She claimed she never liked killing anybody. She just had to do what she did to survive. Debra was simple-minded. She saw everything as black and white. She could not see reality as shades of grey. In other words, she was stupid. She couldn't accept her brother as a serial killer. Even though he only went after bad guys who often had slipped through the cracks and gotten away with murder. Even though he was an otherwise good brother, good employee, good friend, good husband, good father, etc. And she couldn't accept Hannah even though she loved her brother, he loved her, they made each other happy, and Hannah wanted to like her. This is why I never liked Debra. She was a stupid, over-emotional, hysterical, promiscuous, foul-mouthed lunatic who made everything worse she got involved in for herself and everybody else. Hannah tried to kill Debra because Debra was trying to convict Hannah of murder. Debra was a threat. But after Hannah escaped from prison, she and Debra got along. And Hannah never tried to hurt her again. I actually hated Deb the first time I watched the series. But the 2nd time around she grew on me a lot. She was a bit over the top at times with her angst but I ended up liking her. I would have preferred she didn't die.

Yuck. Interesting the poll shows that 56% of fans preferred that Dexter live.

Not only did I hate her in Dexter. But I hate other characters like her in other TV shows and movies. And I hate people like her in real life. I have only watched Dexter once. But I believe if you go back and pay attention, Debra made everything worse that she got involved in for herself and everybody else. I was a truck driver for 20 years. I have heard some filthy language. But nobody curses like this Debra character cursed. She essentially was a homicide detective who couldn't handle homicide. And I believe in real life, even a police force would have told her either, "You have to tone down the cursing. It is not professional." Or, "You are not cut out for Homicide. You don't have the right temperament." If you remember, as often was the case, Dexter told her to stay out, let him take care of it, when he got Estrada alone in the shipping container. And LaGuerta annoyingly showed up. Dexter could have handled it on his own. But no. Despite Dexter telling her (Debra) to let him handle it. She unnecessarily and unwantedly goes there and gets herself involved, and everything is worse. And who has the hardest time dealing with it? No surprise --- Debra. Because she can't handle anything. I can't believe most people can't see this. Debra was a walking disaster that ruined everything she became involved in. The only people I can see liking her are people like her who identify with her illogical incompetence based on simple emotion. People who are too stupid to see the complexities of the real world (shades of grey). But who can only see things through an oversimplified black and white prism. And people who think they should be excused for screwing everything up because, "Hey, they meant well".

Wow, I love this ending, was similar to how I envisioned it, albeit without the dead people, but that is awesome too.

But the second time through, I just like her a lot better. She was never going to be my favorite character or anything but I no longer hated her.

She was like fingernails on a chalkboard to me. Maybe it will help me be a better person.

They mailed in an ending that was unimaginative and cliche. Whether the ending was comedic (good ending) or tragic (bad ending) would not have made a difference. I could have accepted any ending that was indicative of effort. But they mailed in that ending as if they didn't even want to try.

Maybe I was used to her acting style and her odd skinny appearance. It just worked better the 2nd time.

Just look in this thread and see the different endings that fans wanted. There was no chance to please the fans. No matter what they did, about half the fans would hate it. They had no choice but to leave it open ended so the fans could write their own ending.

With all due respect harpospoke, you said you would have preferred my ending better. Yes, half the viewers wanted something else. But half the viewers is better than no viewers. And from what I can tell, nobody liked the ending they chose.

I don't think fans were paying attention to how divided everyone was on what they wanted for Dexter. It's really the fault of the fans that they had to go that way.

I just liked her way more the second time around. If you liked Debra in Dexter, you may want to check out "Jessica Jones" on Netflix. Very similar character --- childish, self-destructive, over-emotional, and simple-minded. She is even thin.

Being the main character like that is a far different thing than being a supporting character to a great character like Dexter. I was motivated to watch Dexter a second time where I discovered I didn't hate Deb. I would probably never watch JJ a second time.
