Okay... TEXT: In a long interview with THR, Disney CEO Robert Iger says that while the return of the Indiana Jones franchise won’t spawn an extended series of annual movies like the revival of Star Wars has, the plan is to make more than one new Indy movie. Iger agreed with the interviewer’s description of the 2019 movie as a “requel” or rebooting sequel, but didn’t commit to what form the series would take thereafter, or whether the series might eventually center on someone other than Ford (either as Indiana Jones or a different character). Here’s the exchange between Iger and THR‘s Matthew Belloni: You have another Lucasfilm property, Indiana Jones, and Steven Spielberg has agreed to make a fifth film. Will there be an Indiana Jones universe, eventually, like Star Wars? Not like Star Wars, no. But we hope … right now, we’re focused on a reboot, or a continuum and then a reboot of some sort. Reboot? You’ve got Harrison Ford for this movie, and then the presumption is there will be a younger … Well, we’ll bring him back, then we have to figure out what comes next. That’s what I mean. It’s not really a reboot, it’s a boot — a reboot. I don’t know. THR has been using the term “requel” for these sequels that reboot the franchise. Requel. (Laughs.) We [got] Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones in the film. But then what’s the direction? I’ve had discussions about what the direction is, [but] I don’t want to get into it. But you do see making more films? Yes, I do. I don’t think it reaches the scale of the universe of Star Wars, but I see making more. It won’t be just a one-off. screenrant.com/indiana-jones-5-movies-reboot-sequel/

i thought rebootquel was the term, sort of like Tron Legacy was called, maybe a few other films, a series relaunch that also serves as a sequel

Maybe they are suggesting... Indiana Jones 5, will be like Indiana Jones 3 & and the Indiana Jones TV Series...
Something like this?
Harrison Ford will star, but the movie will also tell the tale of an adventure when he was a young man, and that earlier adventure is connected to Harrison Ford's adventure...
The younger Indiana will be played by a new actor...
Harrison Ford will retire.
Indiana Jones 6 will be a prequel film, and will be a complete adventure of Indiana when he was younger, played by this new actor.
Indiana Jones 7 will be a sequel to Indiana Jones 6...

The only problem with this is that Shia LaBeouf would have to appear unless he dies off screen (and no one wants LaBeouf). I would rather see a different protege of Indy's come to take the mantle. Some kind of Tom Hardy tough guy would be my pick, but tough guys aren't really allowed in Disney movies anymore so it'll probably be his niece or something.

Not if they skew 1910 through the 30's or whatever. I don't think the franchise has much to offer beyond the 1960's we saw in KOTCS. Hell, they could even go further back to Indiana's father's time.

I agree. Right now, I think a new actor to portray Indy during his youth or his rise to prominence before Temple of Doom would be better than a sequel to Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. I imagine the movie could start with Indy on his deathbed or already dead in the 70's or something with LaBeouf at his side (or a new actor to portray an older Mutt). He tells his son the stories of his grandfather's early treasure hunting adventures. That could work. I just don't want them to mess this up. They could still make a few great adventure movies without ruining the franchise for a cash-grab. We'll know how serious they are about this when we get an official director (because I'm not convinced that Spielberg will stay on).

It may sound cruel, but (to me) Iger seems not only insipid but boorish and nasty: he seems to take a perverse pleasure in stepping on fans' toes, as witnessed by ripping apart Tower of Terror, having ordered employees to lie to letter-writers on the question of whether Disney were actually scrapping it, and bowdlerizing Pirates of the Caribbean in the name of political correctness. I really dislike Mr. Iger at this point.

Agreed. Adventure films of this kind tend to work best when they are set to time periods when the Earth still had lots of places as yet unexplored, and when there was also a lot of exploration going on. So anything later than the first half of the 20th century is going to be... less interesting. For a Jones-like movie, anyway.

I certainly agree to an extent but I think it's a matter of picking the right MacGuffin. Even today, archaeologists are finding remnants of lost cities and uncovering previously undisturbed tombs.

Yes, but still... there was more mystery attached back when maps weren't as accurate, and when we didn't have sattelite coverage. The recent Mummy movie with Tom Cruise could never hope to be as exotic as the ones with Brendan Frasier, partly for that reason.

I really like this sort of approach rather than continuing the series with Jones' son or his protege.

He probably won't be there long if at all, but it's still good to see him get what he deserves. Should they just ditch the Mutt character altogether now? I think that's what I'd do, but I don't know what they've already cooked up story-wise.

It's not like he was some prodigy heir to the adventure throne. It'd be the 70's & 80's when he's reaching adulthood & knowing his way around the world. Pretty sure that's boring Indiana Jones - flying on jets, a McDonald's in every jungle, etc.
