Who's your favorite? i.e. - you know you're in trouble when you're within 2 feet of this character. Me? Rob Zombie's version of Michael Myers. Go!

I liked the RZ version of Michael Myers on his own, just not enough to match the original Shape.
Some others would be:
Jason Voorhees Freddy Krueger Chucky Leatherface Pinhead

Arguable not horror but some say so, I'd go for Hannibal Lecter. His intelligence and the fact he is a Doctor supposedly out to help you is frightening considering. The guy can talk you in to killing yourself. He's not coming at you with a chainsaw or axe which makes him more frightening because he is usually someone you are supposed to take in to confidence and trust.

You sit with him in his office and he wants to kill you and will because you come across as rude or disrespectful. Drink red wine with chicken or play the wrong note on a violin he might come and get you.

We know Lecter is a maniac but the victims don't.

These are not a horror films but they are horrifying characters: Great pics. Mommie Dearest was terrific - and 'Joan Crawford' was terrifying in a few of those scenes. Underappreciated underrated movie.

Mr Barlow from the original SALEM'S LOT.
It helps that I was just a kid at the time but when he made his first - and very sudden - appearance on screen (I think in a jail cell scene), I thought my heart might stop!
I'd also say that the Leatherface character in TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (2003) and TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE: THE BEGINNING (2006) were both especially vicious and sadistic even though I far preferred the original movie.
Boris Karloff also did a very sinister turn in 1945s THE BODY SNATCHER.
I suppose I'd have to add Krug from LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT and Henry from HENRY:PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER, mainly because they each represent a very plausible type of predator, of which we sadly have too many in our midst and neither seem to have any moral threshold.

Mr Barlow from the original SALEM'S LOT. A copy of Count Orlock! He was intimidating though. Helped by James Mason's narration. "The master wants you. Throw away your cross. Your faith against his faith. Can you do that? is your faith strong enough?"

Tough question, but I think my choice would have to be Freddy Krueger.
