Happy 89th Birthday Mark Rydell !!! Born on March 23, 1929 in New York City Thanks for everything, so far... American actor who became a director of some popular and loved movies. Rydell's initial training was in music. As a youth, he wanted to be a conductor. He began his career as an actor and first became known for his role as Walt Johnson on The Edge of Night and as Jeff Baker on As the World Turns, which he played from 1956 to 1962. Begun directing TV-episodes in the 1960s in series like Ben Casey 1963 - 1964 (9 episodes) and Gunsmoke 1964 - 1966 (10 episodes). In 1967 his first movie for cinemas premiered, but has lately returned to occasional acting. Movie acting debut in Crime in the Streets 1956, with John Cassavetes and Sal Mineo, directed by Don Siegel. An oddity. Directing debut for a cinema movie, The Fox 1967, starring Keir Dullea, Sandy Dennis and Anne Haywood. The Reivers 1969 The Cowboys 1972 The Rose 1979 With Katherine Hepburn during the making of On Golden Pond 1981, the only time Mark Rydell was Oscar nominated. Mark Rydell has also directed Cinderella Liberty 1973, Harry and Walter Go to New York 1976, The River 1984, For the Boys 1991, Intersection 1994 and Even Money 2006. During the making of The Long Goodbye 1974, with Elliott Gould, while this movie's director Robert Altman looks on. Playing Al in Woody Allen's Hollywood Ending 2002, with Tea Leoni.
