My sister warned me the second season is not as good as the first. And so far, she is right. It is not as good. (I am on episode 5, season 2 at the time of this post.)
All the things I liked about the first --- smart writing, good acting --- are not as good.
Characters are doing stupid things that only TV/movie characters would do. Not real people. It is stupid and contrived.

I did like that it felt less derivative than the first (which is a Frankenstein monster of things from the 80s the creators like) and that they also give Nancy's bf more to do (he's honestly always been my favorite character), but the writing is definitely weaker and it's overall a forgettable season.

I disagree. To me the first season seemed more original. This second season seems to be more formula. (I am only on episode 5 right now.)

The thing I liked about season one was the characters acted in a smart realistic fashion. Already in season two; 1)the fat kid has that pet lizard that everyone can see is a threat. But he can’t see it. So stupid. Cheesy setup for future problems. 2)11 has all this power to do whatever she wants. Including contact Mike through electronic devices. But she doesn't. Why? So far, no explanation. 3)Mike refuses the new girl (redhead) entry into their little club. Why? 4)Natalia's boyfriend's friends are giving him a hard time. The new kid from California is a total dick. Why? Seems like the writers said, "We need more conflict. Just insert conflict here." Not realistic or smart. Last but not least, I was never a fan of government conspiracies. I could overlook it in season one because everything else was good. But now that the writing and acting have gone down, it is more bothersome. All any character has to do is alert the national press. And the press would be all down the government's throat looking for explanation and blame. Even in the 70's or 80's. Whenever this was supposed to take place.

Should I stop after 1st season? I really cannot say. I can only give my opinion. I am only on episode 5 of season 2. And so far, it is not as good. I really could not stop watching season 1 for the second half of the episodes. But now, I am having trouble making myself watch it. I am thinking about watching something else. It is really your call. If I continue, I will let you guys know what happens and what I think about it.

The second season was great and not of your concerns are valid here and, in fact, have been explained during the season. It is pretty obvious why 'the fat kid' does what he does with the lizard and it is more than obvious why Mike doesn't want the new girl in the club. Also, I am not sure if you are even paying attention asking the question about 11.

Regardless of whether or not they are explained later. That is just bad writing.

I didn't like season 2 as much as season 1. They try to recreate season 1 by having similar things happen and it falls flat. Also, the show has pretty much been handcuffed by its premise.

I find it hard to believe that anyone could watch this any not understand it. Also, I find it equally hard to believe that you did not get 11's motivations this season by not contacting Mike. Everything you had a problem with was easily explained. I am okay, obviously, if you did not like it, but I cannot stand when people post crap about a season that is not even true or they just didn't understand.

I thought both seasons were about the same although season 2 veered a little by focusing on 11 for a couple of episodes.
I haven't been a huge fan though of the series overall.

They were explained as they were happening. Mike missed 11. He became jealous of the new girl and saw her as someone trying to replace 11. Because of this, he automatically rejected her. 11 was specifically told by Hopper not to contact anyone. She wanted to contact Mike many times, but couldn't because it might put him in danger.

And how come the fat kid can't see the danger of the pet lizard? And why are Nancy's boyfriend's friends being so mean to him? And why is the guy from California such a dick?

Do you ask questions like this for every show? Why is he a dick? Well, because he is. Also, Nancy's boyfriend changed. His friend's were bullies and dicks and he isn't anymore. Fat kid liked the lizard because he's a stupid kid.

But thanks for sharing your opinion on why you think it makes sense. Your explanations are not inconsistent with my original complaints. The writers decided we need more conflict. So, we will dumb down the characters because we all know dumb characters have more conflict than smart characters. We will make the fat kid so dumb he cannot see the obvious --- the lizard is a threat. We will make Mike who was attractively mature and smart in season one all of a sudden immature and petty. So he can inexplicably not accept the girl from California. We will turn Nancy's boyfriend's friends into assholes just because --- some people are assholes. And we will introduce a new character from California who is a dick to everybody --- including his own sister because --- hey, some people are dicks. I liked season one because I could relate to attractive and impressive characters. Now everybody has been dumbed down to the point of not being interesting to me anymore. I went to high school in a big city. We had morons, assholes and dicks. But not as many as this little town. Seems unrealistically dense with stupid assholes and dicks. Not interesting or realistic to me. Seems contrived. "We need more conflict. So fill the screen with morons, assholes and dicks." CONTINUATION ON NEXT POST . . .

And I am liking this less and less.
