Interesting... As everyone has been pointing out in the Eli Roth thread, most of his work is filled with gratuitous gore, and it seemed to always be what he was most interested in, and most on this board seem to agree he doesn't have a talent for much else. This movie, I assume, will have to be devoid of gore. This seems to be a children's movie, as I understand, based on children's book. As much I love the idea of a horror movie for kids, and a classic haunted mansion sort of style for a kids movie, the idea of Eli Roth doing it doesn't inspire too much hope. Nor does all of the CGI in the trailer. Although, this will be the best cast he has ever worked with, and probably the best setting and source material since most of his movies are stories that he badly wrote himself. So, I'm curious. But what is the deal with the little 2 second trailer that plays before trailers nowadays? So annoying. I do love this poster though...

Thanks for posting this.
I watched the trailer, didn't realize it was Jack Black at first. Thought the visuals looked fantastic right up until that bit with the tentacle monster trying to force its way out of a closet.
I agree, I really don't see how something like this matches Roth's limited skill set. I don't see any leeway here for gauging out people's eyes, and he doesn't have the actors to deliver amazing lines like "Bro, you're such a fag! Let's get some pussy! Yeah!" in this cast.
Maybe we've all pegged him wrong and he'll be some sort of mad genius in his own subgenre of creepy horror for kids, but more likely this'll be a CGI shit festival and a nice check for Jack Black and Vera Farmiga.

I see this as a change of pace for Eli Roth. The trailer had me from the old school Universal logo.

A friend of mine worked on that movie here in Atlanta. From the title I thought it might be an American attempt at a giallo film but he said it was more of a gothic horror kids movie.

That could go either way. The setting and some visuals look cool. But that closing gag was cheesy.

It does sound like a gallon title. 'Gothic horror kids movie' sounds like it could be great, but the Eli Roth of it all does it inspire ant confidence in it turning out to be a quality film. Also, the over reliance on CGI is a bit worrisome.

Cate Blanchett as opposed to Vera Farmiga, but I take your point. The likelihood of them doing it for the paycheck or for the sake of doing something their kids can see is quite high, and those choices often turn out to be crappy movies. I think the movie is based on a book or series of books, so maybe there is a fan base built in, but nothing other than the atmosphere and idea of the genre/subgenre, and this crap director working with better talent in his car interests me much.
