This is my favorite police show, but I barely ever hear it discussed. Most people today only know about the two comedy movies inspired by it. It was one of Johnny Depp's first major roles. The first four seasons of the show were pretty solid, but the fifth and final season was lacking due to most of the cast leaving. Any thoughts on this show?

I disliked the first captain they had although i understood why they went with him. who would think this greaser slacker looking dude was a legit cop?

Peter Deluise's character, Doug Penhall, is my favorite! I actually liked Captain Jenko. Like you said, he looked unassuming but was very good at his job. Captain Fulher was a good character too. It was interesting how he was more at odds with the other officers than Jenko was. The show got pretty dark at times. Johnny Depp's character was on the verge of mental breakdown due to all the messed up stuff he experienced.

I grew up watching this and I loved it. It dealt with some interesting themes at times.

I wanted to see that show for years before it came out on DVD, and when it finally did, I thought I was going to be disappointed, in the first episode I didn't like ANY of the cops, Hanson was too 'old' for a 21 year old rookie cop, Penhall was a prick and also acted too old to be believable as a high schooler, it wasn't until he offered to kill the dad molesting his daughter that he became a likable character to me. And I understand why they killed off Jenko, but I hate that they did it, because I liked him a lot better than Fuller, Jenko was cool and he knew how to get the job done 'unprofessionally'.

Yeah this is the type of show where the characters eventually grow on you. Penhall became my favorite when he started to go through character development and got over some of his immaturity. He started out as the most intimidating of the officers, but eventually became the friendliest of them.

I only remember watching a few episodes when it originally aired. It never really grew on me. I guess there was always other stuff I wanted to watch on at the same time.

I never watched it. Incidently, I'm friends with Richard Grieico on Facebook.
