Which is the better movie the one from 1937 with Janet Gaynor or the one from 1954 with Judy Garland ?

1954. Garland and (especially) Mason are simply sublime in this.
It's not perfect, though - some of the musical numbers go on forever.
I saw the 1937 version years ago and while I quite enjoyed it, I barely remember it now.

No question, the 1954 version. This was arguably Judy's finest performance, and IMO, she deserved the Oscar more than Grace Kelly!
Janet Gaynor was never one of my favorites, and her performance was only adequate here.

I loved the 1954 version more. It is one of the best, if not, the best performance from Judy Garland captured on film. The 1934 film has its merits and it was focused and linear since the 1954 remake is too long with musical numbers like "Born in a Trunk", which while entertaining, is not crucial to the storyline.

Not a fan of the leading ladies in either version, but love the leading men in both.
I have always found it ironic the the star being born was actually the one whose career was hitting skids, and the failing male was the whose career was on the upswing.
I saw the restored 1954 version when it was released on VHS and felt that James Mason had some of his best scenes cut. Judy was great and I believe both stars deserved Oscars.
But Fredric March's performance was restrained greatness. It really hurt to watch his decline.
But "The Man That Got Away" derserved the Oscar for Best Song.

I like 'A Star Is Born' (1937) a great deal. I still remember when I first saw it. I'd recently seen a very dark screwball comedy I'd fallen in love with, 'Nothing Sacred' (1937), which was also directed by William Wellman that same year. I'd also finished reading the complete works of Dorothy Parker and knew she'd contributed to the script for 'A Star Is Born'. I've never cared for 'A Star Is Born' (1954) or 'A Star Is Born' (1976). Now, I'll be among the first in line with the Little Monsters for 'A Star Is Born' starring the Lady Gaga, Andrew 'The Diceman' Clay and director Bradley Cooper. Unfortunately, the tabloids are overloading salacious gossip of a real-life affair causing the recent five month release date pushback just because the stars were seen kissing on the street. Isn't that their job? That's one lucky dude but then he is in the directors chair lol. Let's hope it's one to remember 'cos this blockbuster's going viral ...
