I liked Gaye Bykers On Acid, aka Lesbian Dopeheads On Mopeds.
These guys had one of my favorite schticks of all time. They would book themselves for a gig as Gaye Bykers, then change into women's clothing, and come back on supporting themselves as Lesbian Dopeheads, so they could get paid twice.

Yeah, I remember grebo as really being pretty much over by the start of the 90s, it was also called "fraggle" for a time as well as being largely about the Stourbridge scene. Thought most of it sucked, really, though I dearly love PWEI's debut album, "Box Frenzy", puerile, slapdash brilliance.

I always preferred shoegaze to either of them

Was Carter USM considered part of that scene?

It was a real mixed up scene....could never really pin down what grebo was. You had your core bands - Wonder Stuff, Neds Atomic Dustbin, Gaye Bykers and Pop Will Eat Itself. But there also all the bands in the periphery that were linked either by association, musically or the fact that they always appeared on the same bill...
Carter USM Mighty Lemon Drops Jesus Jones EMF Renegade Soundwave Crazyhead Mega City 4 Senseless Things Kingmaker Collapsed Lung The Seers
I remember they could also draw some decent surprise support acts that could headline themselves. I saw The Inspiral Carpets at their peak support Carter, EMF at their peak support Carter, Jane's Addiction support the Wonder Stuff, Metal Gurus (The Missions Glam rock side project) support The Wonder Stuff, Nine Inch Nails support Wonder Stuff & Carter in Paris, Suicide support PWEI. It was a fun, and pretty eclectic scene.
