'Presence I'(Jelenlét - 1965)
'Presence II' (Második jelenlét - 1978)'Presence III' (Harmadik jelenlét - 1986)The 'Presence' trilogy consists of three short documentaries with connected narratives filmed at different junctures in time by Miklos Jancso. They have been made available by Second Run films as dvd extras with their release of Jancso's political drama 'Silence And Cry' (1968). All three documentaries have at least three things in common - Jewish cemeteries, tiny rural churches and communal prayer. Koszeg, Hungary
Wroclaw, Poland
Prague, Czech Republic
"Hungarian politics aside, the most intriguing thread running through many of Jancsó’s late works (including 1986’s French-Israeli drama Dawn (L’Aube)) is a fascination with themes of Jewishness – although Jancsó himself was not Jewish, he often expressed solidarity with Jewish people, notably through the multi-part documentaries Presence (1965-85) and Message of Stone – Budapest (Kövek üzenete – Budapest, 1994). Indeed, in the fourth Pepe and Kapa film, Wake Up Mate, Don’t You Sleep (Kelj Fel, Komam, Ne Aludjal, 2003), Jancsó’s ‘Uncle Miki’ dies and the gravediggers debate whether it’s appropriate to bury him in a Jewish cemetery."
- Michael Brooke, 'High Plains Visionary : Miklos Jancso'

Thanks petrolino for the insight on theses marvellous looking extras available on this recent Second Run release of Csend és kiáltás. I have an official French release of the film but unfortunately it does not have as an extra Jelenlét Trilógiája. Being a big fan of Miklós Jancsó work I am curious to upgrade with this latest edition, which is sure to be a beautiful new transfer from the folks at Second Run. I must admit to being a little disappointed with the paucity of unseen world classic releases over the last two years, however Second Run film quality is always exceptional and no doubt some wonderful projects are underway with some terrific surprises in store...

Hi planet. I agree about the current shocking paucity; it doesn't help that so many distribution labels and production companies are committed to repackaging all these movies we've already bought as dvds as pricey blu-rays rather than bringing us more unearthed artefacts from the past. There's so many prominent global directors who've yet to experience a single official dvd release here in the U K, it's both shocking and sad. Second Run are doing a great job. They've slowed down a bit, perhaps struggling financially, yet remain committed to their mission to bring historic film works to a new audience. I can only wish them continued luck in the current market.
