it was so bad that it was actually fairly entertaining. from a certain perspective it had more life than RPO. As sad and odd that sounds. I had less trouble watching this. Although not sure it was meant to be a comedy.

Oh you saw RPO already? I missed that post. yep. Was disappointed . I love the era it was referring to, and was on board with the film and the entire first two or three minutes of the movie I was quite ecstatic. but then it started to be more and more boring, even though there were so many meta jokes and references and references within references …. it became convoluted and at one point i felt cameron Crowe and ted Hughes cant possibly be happy (on being dead too) about the way their creation were used (references to Say Anything and Iron Giant) I felt it was abused rather than used. It feels like Spielberg had focused to much on the visuals and references instead of on the characters. It even seems he had lost his touch in directing kids and building believable characters. This was probably the first Spielberg movie where I couldn't feel anything for anyone there at all. Made me realize the last movie from Spielberg I really liked must have been Minority Report or Munich. And long gone are the days of 3rd Encounter where each character is bubbling with life. In the times of TV shows like Stranger Things, good children actors and well written characters become the norm you expect. And this was very sub-par. Not the actors fault though i dont think. the viewer spent too much time looking at their (final Fantasy reminding) avatars than actors and their relationship was not fleshed out properly. I havent read the book but have a feeling its better. I cant bring myself to give it more than 5 or 5.5. Because even the visual aspect of the movie wasnt that great or unique. Too bad.
Oh and dont be tricked by the marketing thinging there is much of (oddly thin) Simon Pegg. There is not

I agree! It's bad but I kind of liked it's super nihilistic tone. Didn't see a trailer and only saw two TV spots so I didn't really know much.
Direction isn't terrible, but two green screen sequences stand out way too much. I actually think some of it was designed to be laughed at, but the final 15 or so minutes so feel like they belong in a different movie. Still, this is the tone I wanted Proud Mary to toy with. This may be "bad" but at least it was somewhat entertaining.
I actually like RPO though, not love but like.

I found Proud Mary insufferable but this was kinda fun. The only gripe I have with it is that I feel like it was marketed like Revenge Porn (Death Wish sorta thing) whereas in reality this was "bitches be crazy" flick. I feel like the characters (especially his) were inconsistent but agree that the direction isnt terrible at all. With a better script it could have been a decent movie. but this way it at least provided for laughs and kept it interesting enough due to the naive/crazy tone of the narration. Ill see RPO again to see if seeing it without wanting to like it so much makes it better. Everybody says they loved the Shining scene, but to me that also felt abused rather then used well. Oh well, will see.

EXCUSE ME? :-D Adam Sandler is a genius and his three decades of practically uninterrupted commercial success confirm it. There is only one or two people in Hollywood that can say the same (Tom Cruise being one of them). Tyler Perry is nowhere near Adam. Now that we made that clear - I do admire Perry's ability to attract audience. Like Adam, he knows what people want and he gives it to them.

His movies dont even get released in 90% of overseas countries. he caters to people that have long felt under represented on the silver screen. and he gives them ALL roles in his movies and makes the movies simple and entertaining. Thats mostly what it is. I am not hating on him, he is good at what he does, even though the end products are usually of low cinematic quality, as products they work. outside of the USA his audience would be much smaller though, as he builds on US stereotypes mostly.

If I hadn't seen the date on your post I would have believed that you really think that about Adam Sandler.

If I hadn't seen the date on your post I would have believed that you really think that about Adam Sandler. yet its true. tell me another actor with a career as commercially successful as his for so long. ideally on with some kinda of critical acclaim too for at least some of his films. let me save you the work. Its Tom Cruise. And Adam Sandler. Thats about it. There is a reason for it.
