He only made a few movies, but WOW! What a voice!
Yesterday, on TCM, I saw a film of his called (I think) THIS IS THE FIRST TIME. While it had the brilliant art direction, sets, costumes, and Techniclor of the classic MGM musicals, it never became a major hit.
I've heard that Lanza had an enormous ego and couldn't stand to be upstaged by anyone, which may be the reason that he never performed with the same leading lady more than once, especially trained sopranos like Kathryn Grayson and Ann Blyth.
I've also heard that he had ties to organized crime, but I don't know whether to believe that or not.
In any case, IMHO, he left us too soon.

I watched a documentary about Mario Lanza a few weeks ago on the channel Sky Arts. I recall people saying he was a very sociable man who loved being around people and spending time with his family.

Mario Lanza is a sort of opposite, when rock and roll was around the corner, he managed to swoon American housewives that never heard an opera song before in their lives. Maybe Nelson Eddy could do that, but after Mario, not sure, maybe Howard Keel.
It was not my intention to sound negative
