The atmospheric feminist crime horror 'Siesta' is loosely based upon a novel by Patrice Chaplin. Volatile daredevil Claire (Ellen Barkin) wakes up on a runway in Spain and finds blood on her dress. Convinced that either death is coming for her, or death is her instrument, Claire recalls fragments of a dangerous and volcanic past that put her there.
The experimental thriller 'Siesta' is a hypnotic fever dream co-produced by independent film legend Zalman King and directed by innovative music video talent Mary Lambert. The abstract narrative is built from fragments of memory and imagination. The mood of depression never shifts, even when people are feeling happy, and there's a major twist in the tale. It's largely filmed on location in Spain.
'Siesta' serves up a mindbending adventure that's technically dazzling and pulls you into its lead character's strange abyss. Ellen Barkin is superb as a daredevil who can't make sense of her own actions and there are vivid characterisations from Gabriel Byrne, Julian Sands, Isabella Rossellini, Grace Jones, Martin Sheen, Anastassia Stakis, stand-up comedian Alexei Sayle and Jodie Foster who knocks it out the park as an androgynous English tart with a mad love for the ladies. The extraordinary jazz soundtrack is put together by Miles Davis and Marcus Miller.

"Siesta,'' which opens today at the Embassy 72d Street theater, was directed by Mary Lambert, who was previously best known for directing television commercials and Madonna videos; she will still be best known for these things after ''Siesta'' is gone. Still, Miss Lambert's first feature has a game, mischievous spirit and a ripe bohemianism that are appealing."

The romantic tragedy 'Zandalee' derives some of its story ideas from the novel 'Therese Raquin' by Emile Zola which has been filmed several times in an official capacity. Boutique owner Zandalee Martin (Erika Anderson) enters into a torrid affair in New Orleans, Louisiana with freedom fighter Johnny Collins (Nicolas Cage), much to the chagrin of her humiliated husband Thierry Martin (Judge Reinhold). The two men face off in a philosophical duel to the death.
The experimental thriller 'Zandalee' is an atmospheric crime entry from American director Sam Pillsbury who's spent some of his caeer working in New Zealand. The story revolves around an illicit affair that threatens to turn very ugly. The film features knockout performances from Erika Anderson, Nicolas Cage, Judge Reinhold, Marisa Tomei, Joe Pantoliano, Viveca Lindfors, Steve Buscemi and soul singer Aaron Neville. Best line - "I wanna shake you naked and eat you alive."
"Zandalee takes place in New Orleans, which means that there’s a lot of rain, a lot of jazz, a lot of flamboyant accents, and a lot of sweat."
