This is just a random idea I had, but when Andre or Tony come back - not that he is reported as coming back, but because odds are he'll be back eventually - what if we learn that Andre and Tony are actually the same person; and he's had a severe personality split all along? I know Tony and Andre have had scenes together at one time; at least once, 30 some years ago. This could be explained as a visual representation of the one man trying to get to the bottom of his mental illness, by the two identities finally confronting each other. It could also explain how "Andre" lived when he seemingly drowned in quicksand; if it was all just a state of internal perception by Tony.
I don't know if both men were ever in scenes together with other people; I imagine it's more than likely, but at this point it could probably be excused by just about anything and still be more plausible than some the retcons we've had.
Stefano would more than likely have his hand in some of it, probably being aware of Tony's problem and exploiting it by crafting Tony's alternate to his will; maybe enforcing the dissonance by employing doubles on occasion to be one or the other identity to fool the people of Salem. Any time one identity or the other lost control, his death was staged and he'd be given treatment to a point, with one or the other personality gaining primary control for a while.
Even "Andre's" latest "death" could be staged to that end, even though Stefano is gone now. Maybe he left orders for someone to watch over Tondre, or he himself has some limited awareness at this point. Recognizing Abby's break may have been something that spurred Andre to leave and receive new treatment, in order to be able to come back healthy and help Abby.
