I just recently got the mega super duper deluxe versions of the first two Metallica albums, which are loaded with live recordings from that era, and holy moly were they a trainwreck live at that time to my ears.
I've never been someone who thought that Cliff Burton was a far better bassist than their other bass players, but I'm now starting to think that he's rather not near as good as their subsequent bassists.
Not that Cliff is the only problem on these live recordings. The whole band comes across as very amateurish in my opinion.
Of course, I've never been the biggest fan of their first two albums anyway. They're okay, and there's some good material on them, but in my opinion they're easily Metallica's two weakest albums, and there are some very weak tunes on them, too. I don't know what happened to them prior to Master of Puppets--did they all decide to take lessons, buckle down and woodshed 12 hours a day for a couple years or something, as well as attend some songwriting/composition clinics?

Did they release a live album called that that I don't know about?

Do you usually buy the expensive box sets of albums you don't like?

You’re ignoring Load, Reload, St. Anger, Death Magnetic and Hardwired...to Self-Destruct, right? I like all of those more than the first two albums. I haven't heard these special editions of the first two albums. I'm guessing they're imports? I don't recall them being released in the US. I know they did a special box set for Master of Puppets on its 30th Anniversary, but when did they do ones for the first two?
Anyway, I sort of agree with your post. I respect the groundwork the band put on Kill 'Em All, but man, Hetfield's vocals are awfully shrill, the lyrics are immature and I much prefer his actual singing on later albums to his screaming here.
I realize the popular fan consensus is that they fell off after MoP, but I completely disagree. I feel their 6 minute+ song structures were getting stale on ...Justice For All and they needed to go a in a new direction to survive as a band. Most decry it as "selling out", but I see it as evolving and growing creatively. How many metal bands would even attempt to go down that road?
The Black Album is a solid record (and for my money, better than Kill Em All).
Load is very good. Sure, it's a bit overlong and falls into the mid-90's trap of using up all 75 minutes on a CD, but there's a lot of good work here in different musical styles. Their most underrated record, I feel.
Re-Load is decent. It should have been an EP.
St. Anger is easily their worst album. Can't think of any positives about it.
LuLu is an interesting experiment and I give it points for being unique, but it isn't something I want to listen to again.
I haven't listened to Death Magnetic or Hardwired to Self Destruct in their entirety, but I liked the songs I heard.
