I thought the first one was decidedly adult.
The second one was darker I suppose.

It was stranger than the first one was allowed to be, I'd say.

Lost in this controversy is the fact that we never got "Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian"!

Batman Returns wouldn't have worked if it wasn't so gothic and violent. It's kind of the point of the movie.

And yet we had violent R-rated movies like Rambo and Robocop be marketed to kids through toys and cartoons without adults going nuts over it prior to Batman Returns.

They had to have known it was going to be dark and more for adults like the first one was. Granted Returns is a darker film but still. Thats one of the reasons why I love Returns. It has a great dark, gothic tone that feels like a grim graphic novel that came to life. Its a favorite of mine.

Same thing happened after the first Ninja Turtles movie came out back in 1990. Stupid adults and their mollycoddling ways (I say this as someone who was a child during this period).
Fortunately, my own Mum didn't prevent us from watching these films (though she drew the line at Jurassic Park).

Seems WB has had this thing for years where they hire a director who doubles down on their trademark style and pay the price for it.

I thought the first one was decidedly adult. The second one was darker I suppose. Well, the first one didn't open with a baby being thrown in a sewer. Returns was also pretty sexually charged.

It's my favorite Batman movie, including the Nolans. As politicidal & darkreviewer2013 stated, the whole "Oh my god, think of the kids" crap started in the 90s. Sure it was dark, but it was rated PG13...the freaking parents whined and bitched until they got such a rating, but didn't pay attention to it once it was a thing. Proof that not everyone should be allowed to breed.

I have to admit that after the first one I stopped paying attention. I like BR, but I don't like the Penguin character. Keaton was still awesome and Pfeiffer was great, but without Vicki Vale and the crazy DeVito portrayal of the Penguin I really didn't like it. I won't talk about the other films in this series. The less said about them the better. Nolan resurrected what was basically a dead and putrified franchise.

I don't think 'Returns' was all that much darker than 'Batman.' More surrealistic and dreamlike, maybe.
Incidentally, I still have a glass mug from Burger King sold as a 'Batman Forever' promotion.
