Melvyn Douglas was born 5 April, 1901 in the historic city of Macon ( "county jail"), Georgia. He received 2 Academy Awards, a Golden Globe and an Emmy during his lengthy career in the arts, and it's been said he has 2 stars on the Hollywood Boulevard. Douglas received the Best Actor Tony Award for his work in the stage production of 'The Best Man' in 1960. "Melvyn Douglas, the tall dapper actor with an authoritative, slightly raspy voice and trim mustache gained prominence as a distinctive leading-manabout-comedy, suavely pursuing an entire generation of filmdom's love goddesses, ranging from Gloria Swanson and Irene Dunne to Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich."- Peter B. Flint, 'In Like Flint'"In producer David Belasco’s office, a Broadway actress sat awaiting the last of the actors vying for male lead. She had already dismissed the rest of them as unsuitable knowing that this play depended heavily on the chemistry between the leading actors. “Tonight or Never” was the story of a great singer who couldn’t sing at the Met because her voice lacked “heart”. Then she met a man, fell in love, lost her virginity and gained her full voice. Only a special leading man could help her pull that off. Then he walked in “tall, broad-shouldered, exceedingly handsome with a cultured voice and a magnetic personality” and took her breath away. The play was a huge success and so was her leading man, Melvyn Douglas. Samuel Goldwyn bought the screen rights and gave Melvyn a 5-year contract. But the Broadway actress, Helen Gahagan won the biggest prize of all. She married him!"- Melvyn Douglas profiled at 'Arabella & Company'"You might not believe it immediately, but Melvyn Douglas is the ultimate dreamboat."- Sara Canizone, 'Melvyn Douglas : Debonair Dream'

I liked his kind of smooth con man persona in earlier movies, and also his more bitter persona once he returned to acting in early 1960s. Wow, what a great gallery through the ages - 'The Vampire Bat'! I love that movie!!

" Ghost Story" might not have been a great movie, but memories of a date once, that went well. Tell Me a Riddle is a great unknown movie directed by underrated Lee Grant,

His wife, Helen Gahagan Douglas, was elected to a House seat from California and ran for a Senate seat in 1950. She was defeated in a rather nasty campaign, for its day. Her opponent was Richard Nixon.

Douglas made a movie in the early 30s called Prestige. It's about a French officer gradual losing it while administering a penal colony in Indochina. Kind of a Heart of Darkness element in there. Interesting ending scene depicting the nature of colonial ideology and repression. The film doesn't fare well with critics but it's worth seeing.

I like some of the director Tay Garnett's films, thanks. And there's Adolphe Menjou in there too, perhaps as synonymous to "suave" as Douglas was to "debonair".
