Happy 90th Birthday Max von Sydow !!! Born on April 10, 1929 in Lund, Sweden Thanks for everything, so far... Swedish-born international character actor of many European and American films in several languages, including Swedish, English, Norwegian, Danish, German, French, Italian, and Spanish. He was born out of a wealthy family (his mother was a Baroness) and his interest in acting came via amatear theatre. He studied at the Royal Dramatic Theatre (Dramaten) in Stockholm, where he trained between 1948 and 1951. During his time at Dramaten, he made his screen debuts in Alf Sjöberg's films Only a Mother ( Bara en mor) 1949 and Miss Julie ( Fröken Julie) 1951, a screen version of Strindberg's drama. In 1955, von Sydow moved to Malmö, where he met his mentor, Ingmar Bergman. His first work with Bergman occurred on stage at the Malmö Municipal Theatre, and he would go on to work with Bergman on films such as The Seventh Seal ( Det sjunde inseglet) 1957, Wild Strawberries ( Smultronstället) 1957 and The Virgin Spring ( Jungfrukällan) 1960. von Sydow went to America after agreeing to star in the film which led to much greater recognition, in the role of Jesus in George Stevens's all-star epic The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965). From then on he has been in demand internationally. The Seventh Seal 1957 ( Det sjunde inseglet), with Bengt Ekerot The Magician 1958 ( Ansiktet) The Virgin Spring 1960 ( Jungfrukällan) with Birgitta Valberg Winter Light 1963 ( Nattvardsgästerna) with Gunnar Björnstrand. teleadm -- Though I am not good at watching non-English language films, I totally agree that von Sydow has been a treasure for film fans everywhere.
Han är inte bara en stor svensk skådespelare, han har varit en stor aktör
I have seen him in many English-language movies too. Needful Things (1993) Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (2011) The Exorcist (1973) Hawaii (1966) The Emigrants Trilogy under Jan Troell
Have you ever seen Strindberg's Swedish version of Miss Julie (Fröken Julie) (1951)? Max von Sydow only had a very small role in that movie, but I love that particular film--even in Swedish!!! Here, Alf Sjöberg directed some of best and richest imagery I have ever seen in a film!! ---Quote from the Amazon description

I've failed to see it, but it pops up regulary on Swedish TV, but so far on hours when I work...

Legendary actor, I've seen him quite a lot lately, he broke my heart in The Diving Bell and the Butterfly and made me laugh in a recent rewatch of Strange Brew.

The imagery in the 1951 version is just wonderful, though I realize plays and movies have totally different boundaries within which they can work. Another thing that should be remembered is that Woody Allen (who likes to put great old actors in his movies) used Max von Sydow along with Michael Cain, in his movie, Hannah and Her Sisters (1986)

It's too bad that that Ingmar Bergman didn't have a role for him in Autumn Sonata (1978) in which both Ingrid Bergman and Liv Ullmann appeared together. But, while I am just wishing, how about adding Greta Garbo who was still alive at the time? ------------------ On another subject: Jan Troell's trilogy appeared in theaters in the US in the early 70s. I saw them all in English, but I think the supporting cast (at least) was dubbed. It was interesting to see a movie about how Swedish immigrants might have viewed of America as told in a Swedish movie. Also, von Sydow and Liv Ullmann made was a good match, though Ullman is about 10 years younger than von Sydow.

But, while I am just wishing, how about adding Greta Garbo who was still alive at the time? Billy Wilder once asked Garbo what kind of role she would consider if she wanted to make a comeback, she answered: A Clown, a male clown! There where rumors that Romy Schneider would get her to make a comeback in the mid 1970s. There were also rumors she would make a small role in Garbo Talks 1985. Garbo used to go the The Swedish Church in New York to read Swedish newspapers, so it's not impossible that she at one time or another met both Bergmans and von Sydow there, as this was before internet and usually the only way to get news from their homeland.

Not sure, but is this him in Miss Julie (1951)? I would love to see that version. It's von Sydow allright, but I'm not sure if it's from Miss Julie, that's why I didn't use it. It was the same with his movie debut, Bara en mor, there was someone in the background that might be von Sydow on one pic, but I wasn't sure.

Happy birthday Max! Just saw him last week in Wild Strawberries (1957) as a gas station attendant. I really loved that movie, by the way.
