I don't think there was any interest on this board, from even one single person, but here it is anyway.
Looks pretty stupid and way too CGI reliant... but if it embraces the stupidity that might be fun.

This is going to be the next Jaws Other than being the next movie with a big threatening shark, it is no way the next Jaws. There is another trailer with a somewhat more serious tone, without the light and fun song choice, that features the Chinese costars much more.. Naturally to bring in that asian box office revenue: Can't tell if a more thriller-style approach is better, or if the dumb fun of the first bodes well for it. But one thing is for sure: Too much god damn CGI everywhere.

I'm not sure how you could have made a convincing Megalodon via practical effects for the type of action the film apparently had in mind.

[/quote] Yeah, I didn't expect them to do any of the megalodon stuff practically, but not everything needed to look so fake. Like the shot of the jellyfish and some kettle bell looking anchor or something hitting the ocean floor look entirely animated, and that's just typical and kinda lame.

This was apparently in the inception phase in 2006 and then escalating budget concerns put a hold on it. It looks like expensive, polished B grade rubbish. Eli Roth was attached to direct at one stage, but he wanted an 'R' rating, as well as being the star. This one looks like a Megaloturd in the making. I read about that somewhere. This property has been a commodity for a while now for whatever reason. I'm not familiar with the book or its sequels, but apparently people like them and that's why it's never really been dropped, I guess. I suppose at that time, maybe they were going to try to do some of the movie with real locations and some practical effects, but the budget probably came down from just saying 'fuck it, let's do everything in CGI other than Jason Statham's face.' Doing a goofy giant shark movie wouldn't be the worst thing for Eli Roth, but I'm certainly thankful that we were spared of him trying to direct himself as an action hero. This does look very dumb, and I don't know what the tone of the book is, but the best approach seems to be to go the Deep Blue Sea route and hope to get to cult status as a somewhat self aware silly pseudo horror action movie.

Trailer suggests the makers don't know if it's a serious film or a comedy. And isn't the Meg a glowing white color in the books? Very disappointing with the average look of it here. Looks like a bare step up from something out of Finding Nemo.
Also, Jason Statham doesn't interest me as an actor, I just can't get through any of his films. Will probably still try to watch this, though.

It looks about what I expected. Unlikely to see it in theaters but look forward to it on VOD

Well, anyone who read the original novel can tell you it's always been B-Movie fluff style stuff.

Maybe it's not the "Uber-Serious" thing they wanted but it fits the book pretty well.

Maybe it's not the "Uber-Serious" thing they wanted but it fits the book pretty well. I'm aware of the book, but I haven't read it, so I can't make a judgment on that. But the reception from some of the fans and the log line for the book; 'a novel of deep terror' would suggest that it's meant to be taken seriously and not the campy fun absurdity that the trailer, at least the first US trailer and not so much the international one, makes it out to be. On the other hand, if the subject matter was taken overly seriously, I could see it being inadvertently comedic, and that could have been far worse. It's kind of a silly premise.

Just a feeling that the humor will sink it. I'd rather it was straight, serious piece of work.
