Those Starfleet uniforms aren't too flattering, save for Lt. Ilia. She's got legs!

Her oath of celibacy is on record.

Great visuals and Persis Khambatta's a sultry presence, but everything else about it is just OK.
For me, Trek films really started with Wrath of Khan.

Saw this at a drive in, it was showing before Raiders. It was so boring my date said she was going to lay down, so she plopped her head right into my lap. I jokingly said "Well, while you're down there..." Next thing I know she's unzipping and the next fifteen minutes of the movie were quite enjoyable.

I like the first film for what it is. The uniforms indicate that around this Stardate Star Fleet went through a 1970's retro look.

The movie is really boring, very lazily directed--some nice visuals for sure tho

A visual feast. I love the Director's Cut, it fixed the big problems in the prior releases. The look and feel of the film is unique in all of Star Trek. And the score by Jerry Goldsmith is a masterpiece.

Only thing that is remarkable about this mediocrity is the outstanding, brilliant score. High art.

One of my favourites. It's a genuinely epic Star Trek film with a masterful soundtrack and a hard sci-fi edge. The Director's Cut, in particular, is a masterpiece IMO. I'll forever defend this movie.

Really really slow, but if you turn down the sound, and just take it as visual experience with Goldsmtih's amazing score, it works.

I think it is, too. I had seen the other versions, though honestly I can't tell which is which. There is the theatrical and the tv and then another longer tv version? I don't know! But I still own the dvd of Star Trek the Motion Picture Director's Cut I bought when it came out. They had added some extra effects and we finally got to see V'Ger, they edited out a lot of unnecessary scenes (especially the ones where Kirk is always annoyed at McCoy just after telling him 'Dammit, Bones, I need you!') and the scenes on Vulcan a definite improvement. Just a gorgeous epic SF film made for the big screen. As previous poster mentioned, one of the few films I could watch with the score only and still enjoy.

The Only Things that I liked about "THE MOTION PICTURE" were The Soundtrack and The Entire Beginning Scene with the 3 Klingon Cruisers.

Phersis Khambatta died way too young.
I was around 13 years old when the movie came out and in love with Star Trek, so the movie could have had twice as many extended f/x shots of the Enterprise warping through amorphous space clouds and I wouldn't have cared. The uniforms were drab as hell, certainly.

The theatrical, a TV version from 1983 and The Director's Cut. Like you, what I loved most about the latter was finally getting to see V'Ger for the first time. The pacing was also better.
