Paige gets a chance this season to not be the most annoying character. I'm glad this show is ending. I'm not convinced by Paige's conversion to mommy's little spy helper. I just don't think that would happen in real life. It would freak most kids out if they found out their parents were leading a double life. It also doesn't make sense that Elizabeth thinks she can shield Paige from murdering and using sex, but maybe a parent would do that for as long as she could. I also don't buy Paige's sudden interest in Russian culture with those cooking sessions and movie viewings. Has Paige already learned Russian so well that she can watch movies in that language? And remember when Elizabeth beat up Claudia a few season ago? Seems strange how warm their relationship has become and what a cozy trio they make.

I think we're supposed to believe at least a year has passed since the prior season. That would be enough time for her to pick up a lot of Russian, since it's one of the only things she's been focusing on. Liz will do just about anything if she's been ordered to do it, no matter what she might personally feel about it,so I can see her trying to get along with Claudia. And the toll of that has been visibly wearing on her.

You are right about the passage of time being at least a year. Things seem very different from when we left off. Philip has been a civilian while Elizabeth is near a nervous breakdown from the job. The kids seem very mature. You talk about Paige being an annoying character, do you watch "Homeland"? It's similarly about politics and national security, only in the present day with terrorism. In season 1, a teenage girl on that show annoyed everybody. I guess writers like to get away from the spy action and focus on family. It is kind of fascinating on "The Americans" where you have these kids who have no idea who their parents, and they themselves, really are. I just don't think I would convert to being a Russian national in a foreign land as Paige did. I would freak out, run away, and turn the folks in to the authorities. I can't believe she visited Russia with Elizabeth. What are you expecting from the show this season? The travel agency appears to be failing, probably being done in by the Internet. Not sure what this will drive Philip to do but the family is in financial trouble. I guess there are limits to Russia's funding them?
Looks like Philip and Elizabeth will be pitted against each other, hardcore E. being for the old Soviet Union that Putin is trying to bring back, P. aligning with the more liberal leaders that preceded Putin.
Something will happen to Paige that Philip will find intolerable and he'll want her out of the spy business.
The son will become an FBI agent one way or another.

Yes, I watch Homeland. Overall, it has been a far more enjoyable show, although neither of them has ever reachieved the high points of the first seasons. I remember myself complaining about the first two seasons of The Americans focusing too much on the strains in their marriage. I didn't really care about their marriage. I have always been much more interested in the espionage stuff.
The daughter in Homeland was never as annoying as Paige was in earlier seasons of The Americans.
Something to remember about Paige is that she became a very committed Christian. I don't think she ever gave all of those values up. Maybe she has taken the Christian commandment to honor one's parents to heart, and has chosen to become a Russian spy because that is what her parents (especially her mother) have told her she needs to do. She hasn't yet been faced with having to choose between the commandments of honoring your parents and do not kill. Her parents have apparently been lying to her about whether they kill people in cold blood.

Elizabeth is one of the most loathsome characters in television history. She has ruthlessly killed innocent bystanders many times, destroyed lives and ruined families, eagerly manipulates her own family with no concern for how they feel and that's glossing over her bad points. Phillip is guilty of some of those things too but at least he shows remorse, questions if they are even doing the right thing anymore and doesn't want his kids involved.
If the show ends with anything less than Elizabeth in prison or preferably brutally killed then the show is a pathetic failure.

and that's glossing over her bad points No question, she is a very hard person to feel for. If an order came down to kill her own children, I don't doubt that she would outdo Abraham. But I tend to be able to somewhat empathize with the position she finds herself in. She's been brainwashed into thinking that these actions she has been taking are necessary to protect her people. If she doesn't succeed in her missions, millions of innocent people (in Russia) could die, including millions of children and babies. She sees herself as a kind of soldier on the front lines of an epic war. I agree, though, that characters like Phillip and Stan and Gabriel are far more sympathetic.

Although it's interesting, now that I think about it, that the two strongest and often coldest and most ruthless characters in the show are women (Liz and Claudia).
I wonder was that intentional on the writers' part.
Anybody remember Rosa Klebb in From Russia with Love?

It is one of the very rare times that a TV child is not the most annoying character. Trying to compare her to the girl from Homeland is a complete joke. She was awful in every way and everyone hated her. Also, Homeland is much better now than it used to be. The first season was great, but then the show had a lot of trouble finding its way. These past two seasons have been fantastic. It has really found its stride.

Elizabeth will get her punishment, and it might be at the hands of Philip. They are on opposite sides now, he with Russian reformers and she with old school hardcore Soviets. Right now he's merely spying on her, but they will confront each other eventually, and I think one of them will kill the other.

I think you're probably right about one of them killing the other and I also think Paige being seriously injured or killed could be the catalyst. It's odd that she went from being somewhat intelligent and empathetic to happily being brainwashed and ready to destroy the only country that she's ever known.

Well, I hate Elizabeth more than ever after this week's episode. The 7-year old is lucky because she wouldn't have spared him if he had seen her. She's a serial killer. It's not really plausible that they would have gotten away with so many murders and I don't believe real life spying involves killing, only rarely.
And it also annoys me the way she practically romanticizes life in Russia when she was a child, when she had to eat rats. Why isn't she grateful for the quality of life she has for her family in her new country? Except she and Philip have no real friends, must be a lonely existence.
I love that Philip did the right thing for once, with Kimmy. Let's see how well that goes over at home.

Why was it necessary? It's not like his first instinct would be to jump to the conclusion that the girl who gave him a fake number was a Russian spy in training. He'd just assume she gave him fake digits because she wanted to ditch him. He'd think he failed at the pick up. Life could have went on.

Maybe Elizabeth is one of those parents who doesn't want her daughter to date anyone, only she carries it to an extreme. More likely I think these shows think they need a killing every so often to keep some viewers hooked, and they were due for one.
