First of all, of course Spielberg and lucas were friends, but I think coppola was Lucas's mentor. If you look at the fact that coppola was basically Lucas's mentor during the 70's, considering that francis ford coppola took George lucas under his wing and what not: So basically, what is the godfather about at it's core, that isn't the mafia? Fathers and sons right?
What is star wars about( all 6 episodes)? A lot of it is about fathers and sons right?
So therefore star wars was inspired by Coppola and the godfather obviously, heck we even get a prequel in the godfather part 2 do we not? So therefore lucas is partly in the style of coppola trying to tell his stories. Both sets of films are about the fall of the dad and rise of his son right? Mmhmm, that's right isn't it?

I've never thought about that connection. Can't believe I'm saying it, but good post, Joe.
By the way, Han Solo was based on Coppola himself.

I know American Graffiti was directly inspired by Coppola telling Lucas "Show me you can do a comedy with human moments." As for Star Wars connecting to Coppola, I've never seen or read anything about that as a lifelong fan.
