It was a really fun flick. Going into it for anything other than the creatures is a mistake. The dialogue was simplistic, the characters 2 dimensional. The Rock was a total Gary Stu. He curates a zoo, can do sign language with an ape, pilot a military helicopter, and all while making a dirty T-shirt look fabulous. I'll give Dwayne Johnson credit: He's not trying to do Shakespeare, and he picks roles that suit him. The weakest parts of the film were definitely the scenes without the creatures. Still, it was well paced, the effects were great, and I was entertained. it gets a 7 from me.

I'm calling it. Johnson is gonna push for Brad Peyton to direct him in Black Adam. Assuming that WB/DCEU follow through with it.

Yeah, George was well done. The mutant wolf was hit for me. I won't lie, this is terrible, but I actually cheered when he hate what's her face. I was surprised they went there, but that character was insufferable. There's just no way that they'd have met him live after eating someone though.

Do you guys think they left it open for a sequel? I have a feeling that chick's pet rat will come into play if they do.

For Johnson or Morgan? The latter I keep hearing is a blast to watch.

Ouch! What did you hate? I'm a special effects whore and an animal lover. I'm always over generous with these types of creature features.

But I’m a firm believer that dumb fun can, and should, be well done. Take ‘Pacific Rim’ for example (a film I love). It’s silly, and at times preposterous, but it’s essentially a love letter to the child in us all and the filmmaking behind it is fantastic with great style. The visuals, all the fights being shot at low angles making us look up at the towering creatures etc.. Rampage was dumb fun that wasn’t fun. The filmmaking behind it was lazy and uninspired. Now, I like my dose of moster movies as much as the next. I’m really looking forward to ‘Meg’.

I loved the creatures in Rampage, but I'm also a horrible person who roots for the humans to get eaten most of the time because they are usually so insufferable. My biggest bitch with Rampage was that there weren't enough of the creatures.

I'm a sucker for a monster movies, so I saw this. It was an OK timewaster.
Johnson does his usual shtick - the tough badass with a heart of gold. Naomie Harris and Jeffrey Dean Morgan were decent support. It was fun to see Joe Manganiello early on. The two villainous siblings did what they were supposed to.
I guess what let me down was the actual monster carnage. We don't even see the giant alligator until halfway through and the final battle between the three animals isn't very exciting. So they're just going to forgive George for turning back to good despite all the casualties he caused?
6/10

I'd go with pretty much everything Ravi02 said except that I'm not a monster movies fan so I'll go with a 5/10.

I went in hoping for a silly fun entertaining monster movie, and that's just what I got. Love the creatures, love that the movie was a little tongue in cheek about it ("Of course the wolf can fly.") Even liked the FBI guy who walked a nice line between being an ass and being a good guy. And I loved that the action wasn't all shaky-cam crap that stopped you from being able to see what was going on, something that has ruined many an action movie. It did exactly what it said on the tin.

I loved Rampage (see above) but I can't stand the original Pacific Rim movie precisely because there's so little fun and the action is so poorly done. Virtually all of it happens at night or underwater, to save a few bucks on the special effects. The story is plodding and just gets in the way. It didn't help that the five minute exposition dump at the start was a far better story than the one we got for the next couple of hours, either. I will say, the sequel fixes a whole lot of that. Pacific Rim 2 was exactly the movie I hoped Pacific Rim would be.
