Based on True storys? The Conjuring. Annabelle. The Exorcist. Amityville Horror. The Entity. Blair Witch. Paranormal Activity. do people really expect audiences to believe those things really happened

Selling point. Ghost shows and wannabe X-Files are all the rage now.

To be fair, I don't think that's only true of supernatural horror movies. Slashers and other types have played that card too.
But I do roll my eyes more when it's a ghost or something, because obviously it's nonsense. But yes, I do think some people believe those things, and yes that becomes a selling point. People are gullible.

In the Blair Witch's case they claimed the footage was real for a period of time. That was a bit of very creative marketing. Paranormal Activity came so much later that that tactic wouldn't have worked, but they did claim it was based on a true story.

That's most likely the reason The Conjuring franchise has been so successful both Conjuring films and both Annabelle films were based on true events i'd be willing to bet money both The Nun and Crooked Man will be atleast loosely based on true events

Wolf Creek (2005) IS a prime example of this. The film makes it seem like it's based on one serial-killer when in-fact it's a composite of three. Two more well-known cases and one lesser-known.

This has been in the Hollywood playbook of marketing for years though. Fargo is probably the most famous example; marketed as a true story when it's an amalgamation of different events and outright fiction.
