Man of Steel was on FX yesterday for about the billionth time. I remember when it came out people complained about how it wasn't reflective of Superman.
What were these people watching? Christopher Reeves Superman also killed Zod and Henry Cavill was just as wholesome, American, etc.; as he could be without being out right cheesy. It's a very solid performance.
Hell, most of the performances in this movie are. it's a really well actived movie. It's a shame some the effects are just awful; a problem that seems to plague the DC movies. It really takes you out of the movie.

I think the complaints about Cavill are unfair... but I do think the complaints about Snyder's version of Superman are valid. The Superman in Snyder's movies is very un-Supermanlike. The guy is all gloom and doom and mopey and very Edward-Cullen-like. Now, that is not the fault of Henry Cavill. Having watched Man from UNCLE I can say that Cavill can be a very charming character, which I think they should explore more with his Superman. He can be a great Superman and Clark kent, he just needs a proper director and writer to make it happen.
The only complaint I have against Cavill is that he's kinda small for Superman, especially when Batfleck and Aquamoa are both taller than him.

Yeah Henry Cavill really looks the part and he could be a fantastic Superman but the direction especially in Batman vs Superman made him too mopey.
The Justice League version of Superman was actually really good though. I want to see more of that Superman.

Never had a problem with any big screen Superman casting. I'm not a big fan of the character, but I think every choice they have made seemed right at the time

Agreed, though I thought the fx work was fine.

I mostly just don’t get the complaints about how he’s supposedly some kind of psychopath who destroys cities and doesn’t save people. Apart from the fact that he saved the entire planet in MoS, it was also shown that he regularly saved people’s lives prior to becoming Superman. That’s how Lois was able to find him. He even explicitly took his fight with Doomsday into space in order to avoid collateral damage.

Problem is, no disrespect to the guy, he's just not that good as an actor. He doesn't disappear into the role like the MCU actors do. Like RDJ is Tony Stark, Chris Evans is Captain America. I am however looking forward to see him in the new Mission Impossible.

I've never had an issue with Cavill. My issues are with the movies more than him. He's just doing his best with what he was given.

It isn't him that is bad, it is the way the character is written. The only movie so far where he actually acted like Superman was Justice League.

Like others have said, there really is no problem with Cavill himself. It's the movie itself. Cavill can be a great Superman if they let him be Superman.

Recall that he had less lines of dialogue than either Lois Lane or Lex Luthor in his own sequel? I think that goes with movie makers having other character react to and tell us about the title character(s) rather than have us react to the character. For the most part all we see is the character be action man. Like Transformers being mostly about Sam/ Cade, TMNT being more about April, X-men being more about Wolverine. It's to the point we form our opinions of Superman because of how Lex Luthor or Batman or government officials see him.

I am however looking forward to see him in the new Mission Impossible. To be fair with Cavill, it's not easy to disappear in a role that's written that thinly. I mean, Snyder's Superman only really has 3 emotions: look aloof, look mopey and look angry. He doesn't even get to talk that much.

There's nothing wholesome or all-Anerican about Cavill in Man of Steel unless you're a cynical nihilist. In Justice League, on the other hand, he had it pretty down.

I never had a problem with the casting of Henry Cavill. I think every actor who has played the role of "Superman" has done a decent job. I even thought Brandon Routh was good in the role though the movie was horrible.

He is fine. And the Superman with the most consequential character development so far. But he must step in big shoes and dance to a different Superman tune in them. That isn't easy.

I saw the movie about a year after it came out, and I thought it was fantastic, Cavill was perfect as Superman, visual effects were great, Krypton being destroyed, great cast, great villain, one of my top 20 favorite movies of all time
