This post applies equally for DC and Marvel, but I’m posting it here because the same posters frequent both boards, and I’m interested in reading your thoughts. Basically, in what way do you remember first seeing these characters, whether by the comics themselves, TV shows (animated or live-action), or movies? A few reasons I’m doing this, but I hope others are interested; you’re allowed to choose any characters you’d like. I was never particularly interested in comics (except Golden and Silver Age stories), so you’ll see few of them on my list. Superman is, of course, such a pop-culture icon that everyone seems to grow up with him, but I think I first saw him in the ‘40s Fleischer cartoons. I learned pretty much everything I knew about superheroes (not much) from my grandfather, who loved them, and I watched those cartoons, which he vaguely remembered from his childhood, with him. They’re still tons of fun. From there I saw the Christopher Reeve Superman, which I still consider the best superhero flick of ‘em all, and Superman: The Animated Series. I first saw Batman probably in Batman: The Animated Series, which I never got into at the time (and am kinda rediscovering now). Also the animated Justice League and its sequel-series. I always loved Spider-Man as a kid, though I remember being scared by this vampire-esque storyline in the ’94 Spider-Man series (! ). That was a really fun show, as was (the admittedly inferior) Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends. Then cemented by the movies, of which the first two have that “movie magic” that scabab and others have mentioned elsewhere. I probably didn’t see Wonder Woman until the Justice League show, but the actress who voiced her was very good in that. (And I greatly enjoyed last year’s Wonder Woman movie.) I really have no idea where I first saw Captain America; it might have been on a collectable lunchbox in our garage or something. I liked him because he reminded me of Superman—that patriotic theme, I guess. I remember the newspaper running an article on the character when he “died” in the comics. I suppose that I first learned of the Fantastic Four when the ’05 movie came out—they weren’t particularly on my radar. I probably learned of the X-Men thanks to the ‘90s Spidey show, which I remember very well…and, yes, a ‘90s Spidey guidebook that I vaguely remember. I learned of Captain Marvel (the DC character) very early because he was my grandfather’s favorite superhero. I eventually found the ‘40s Captain Marvel serial and watched it with my grandpa—a great memory… I didn’t know of most of The Avengers and Justice League characters until the movies for the former and the TV show for the latter. I had vaguely heard of most of the heroes but didn’t really know anything about them. OK, off to you!

Good idea for a thread. Might be a bit hard for me to remember now.
Batman - Is the one I've been the fan of the longest, perhaps since 4 years old. I think that was also down to Batman: The Animated Series which I started watching from near the start. I had a lot of the toys, I had the Batcave and the Batmobile. I know I was a fan of the character before Batman Forever and I was 5 at the time. I can't remember if I'd seen the other movies.
X-men - Would have been next as the cartoon was around the same time. Again I had the toys including the Black Bird but I never had Wolverine because he was hard to get so I had the Weapon X Wolverine instead.
Spider-man - May have come a little bit after as the cartoon came out later than those two. I know I caught that from the first episode which had the Lizard in it. I also was pretty excited for the PlayStation game that came out eventually a few years later.
Superman - I was never that into Superman like the others. It had a cartoon that came a bit later but never saw that much of that one. I had a couple toys but not many. I was always much more into Batman. I may have watched the movie prior to seeing the series but have no idea when.
Then a lot of the others would have probably come after. Fantastic Four and Iron Man had a cartoon but I didn't really watch them much and would have known about them from the Spider-mam cartoon.
Captain America I remember watching that old crappy TV movie that came out in 1990.
There was a Justice League TV movie that came out in 1997 which is probably when I found out about Flash and Green Lantern. I would probably have known who Wonder Woman was by then.
By the time I was about 10 or so, I had the DC vs Marvel comic crossover and that would be when I found out about Shazam and Aquaman and some of the others.

Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman
I was introduced to these iconic superheroes by the Super Friends cartoon show on Saturday mornings in the mid-1970s. From there, I watched the Adventures of Superman TV show starring Geroge Reeves when it was in syndication, watched the Batman TV show starring Adam West and Burt Ward when it was in syndication, and watched the Wonder Woman TV series starring Lynda Carter during its original run. And of course, I went to the theater and watched Superman: The Movie in 1978.
Spider-Man
Re-runs of the Spider-Man cartoon show in the 1970s. I still remember the catchy theme song, which was played in the first Spider-Man movie.
Captain America
The 1979 TV movie.
Fantastic Four and X-Men
The comics. I started reading those comics in the late 1970s. Those were the only Marvel comics that I read regularly.
Captain Marvel
The Shazam! TV show produced by Filmation on Saturday mornings in the mid-1970s.
The Avengers
Re-runs of the 1960s TV show starring Patrick Macnee and Diana Rigg. I never even knew Marvel had an Avengers team until I started reading the Fantastic Four and X-Men comics in the late 1970s.
The Justice League
I already knew about Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman from watching the Super Friends cartoon show in the mid-1970s. I found out about Flash and Green Lantern from reading the comics in the mid-1970s.

Interesting question. Looking back now the first time I saw 'Superman' was in either 'Superman' or 'Superman 2' with Christopher Reeve, the first time I saw Batman was in the Adam West 'Batman' TV show, the first time I saw Spider-Man was in a 'Spider-Man' comic book, the first time I saw Wonder Woman with in the Lynda Carter 'Wonder Woman' TV show, the first time I saw Captain America, X-Men and the Fantastic Four were in comic books, I never heard of Captain Marvel (The DC character) until a few years ago, I knew most of the characters in 'The Avengers' from separate comic books and the same can be said about the 'Justice League' members including other members like Supergirl, Martian Manhunter and Green Lantern but I never heard of Green Arrow until he was in 'Smallville' and had heard of Aquaman but didn't know that much about him until he was in 'Smallville' too. Cyborg I knew from 'Teen Titans.'

Superman and Batman - from Super Friends
Wonder Woman - I can't recall if it was in Super Friends or the Lynda Carter show. Can't remember which I saw first.
Spiderman- from Spider Man and his Amazing Friends with Firestar and Iceman
Captain America - the TV movie where he's riding on a motorcycle.
X Men - a comic. It had Blob on the cover. He was holding Rachel in his left hand and punching Rogue with his right. He was standing on a rock and Colossus was lifting it. Under the rock with Peter was Kitty who was holding an unconscious Storm. The X Men fought the Freedom Force in the issue and I was so pissed because the X Men lost.
Fantastic Four - in a Transformers comic book ad.
Avengers - a comic book, the one where Herc, Wasp and Black Knight were trapped in limbo.
Justice League - the one where the cover showed Gypsy, Vibe, MM and Steel, old and dying.
Captain Marvel - In the same comics as when I first saw the Avengers. Not Carol Danvers, this was African American, don't know her name.
RE Shazam, I first saw him in the The Kid Super Power Hour with Shazam! There was Billy, Mary and Freddy, and I remember Black Adam was there too.
One thing that I didn't like about this cartoon is that when Billy turned to Shazam his eyes always looked like they were shut. You couldn't see his pupils.

Thanks for your picks, everyone! Very interesting reading. I just want to reiterate that you don’t have to go by my character choices; you can pick any characters you’d like.

I think was aware of them from the comics. I may not have read all their titles in the beginning, but for example, if you picked up a Superman comic, you also got many adverts etc within for many other DC characters. For years I was aware of Shazam only from adverts in DC comics

I honestly can't say when I learned of these characters. It just seems like they have always been there. Even stuff like Superman The Movie was always there. Star Wars was synonymous with Superman because of John Williams's score. Maybe them being in the Saturday morning line-up? I think I might have been introduced to the X-men in "A Firestar is Born." I picked up random comics if I liked the cover and had extra money when I was little.

Great question.
Batman - Tim Burton's 1989 movie
Superman - Donner's 1978 movie
Wonder Woman - Justice League cartoon
Green Lantern - Justice League cartoon (John Stewart) / Ryan Reynolds movie (Hal Jordan)
Spider-Man - Raimi's first movie, actually it was the first superhero movie I ever saw.
Hulk - Sadly, Ang Lee's 2003 bomb
Wolverine and X-Men - The cartoon series
Fantastic Four - My dad read the comics and told me about them before the 2005 movie came out.
Daredevil - the 2003 movie.
Iron Man - literally found out about him online searching for Marvel superheroes on Google one time. By the time the 2008 film came out, I already knew by name only.
Thor and Captain America - same as Iron Man
The Avengers - discovered them when I was researching Iron Man
Guardians of the Galaxy - literally when the film was announced
Ant-Man - same as GOTG, and that was pre production back in 2006
Doctor Strange - He popped up in a comic I was reading
Captain Marvel - same as Doctor Strange

I'd never heard of Guardians of the Galaxy either until it was announced. I knew of Ant-man and Doctor Strange from a few things because they'd been in animated movies and I'd read comics with them but never Guardians of the Galaxy.

Ditto for me—though I still haven’t seen the entirety of that movie. Really doesn’t seem like my cup of tea.

I've always been more interested in TV/movies than comics, so:
Iron Man, Spider-Man, Captain America and Thor: TV cartoons in the late 70s. Iron Man and Cap were not even fully animated.
Batman: the classic TV show with Adam West in the late 70s.
X-Men: a random comic issue with the original team in the late 70s.
Superman and a lot of DC heroes of old: a bizarre book partly comic and partly directory in the early 80s.
Wonder Woman: the TV show with Lynda Carter in the mid 80s.
Hulk: the TV show with Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno in the mid 80s.
Judge Dredd: a videogame in the late 80s.
The bulk of Marvel heroes other than Iron Man, Spider-Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk and X-Men: Marvel comics early to mid 90s.
Lobo: Lobo kills Santa Claus comic mid 90s(?).
Guardians Of The Galaxy: MCU movie in 2014.
Harley Quinn and Suicide Squad: online DC comics in 2016 in preparation for the 2017 movie.

Because that's the greatest cartoon of all-time, and you should go watch every episode immediately. The entire thing is on Prime to stream.

For some reason I can only remember one episode where Batman was in a sewer or something. Randomly, I also remember eating cream corn while I was watching it... Not sure why that stuck in my head for so many years.

The series is a masterpiece. By far my personal favorite version of every character in it.
