In 2008, The Dark Knight was snubbed for a Oscar nomination for Best Picture. That led to the Academy increasing the maximum number of Best Picture nominees from 5 to 10 starting in 2009.
In 2016, Deadpool became the 1st CBM to be nominated for Best Motion Picture by the Golden Globes (although it was for the Comedy category), but wasn't nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture.
In 2017, Wonder Woman was nominated for Best Theatrical Motion Picture by the Producers Guild of America. There was plenty of discussion on many Internet sites that either Wonder Woman or Logan could break through and become the 1st CBM to be nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture. Logan was nominated for an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. But once again the Academy snubbed Wonder Woman and Logan for Best Picture, which suggests that no CBM will ever break through and be nominated by the Academy for their top award.
But with Spielberg directing Blackhawk, the question is no longer "Could Wonder Woman or Logan be nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture?". The question is now "Could Blackhawk win the Oscar for Best Picture?".
Spielberg has been nominated for an Oscar for Best Director 7 times and has won twice (Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan). 10 of Spielberg's movies have been nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture (with Schindler's List winning the Oscar). So if any CBM is going to break through for the Academy's top award, Blackhawk (a World War II era movie directed by 1 of the most highly-respected Directors in Hollywood history) is most likely the movie that can do it.

Get Daniel Day Lewis and Meryl Streep in the leads, and its chances soar.

It could be the final step.
TDK was a step when legder got an award for acting.
Logan took the step further when the entire movie was nominated for writing. the second most prestigious nom after best picture for overall movie art.
Blackhawk may now complete the step for overall picture. if the movie turns out to be a comic book movie that also has the spirit of Warhorse and Saving Private Ryan

His other World War II era comic book movie Adventures Of Tin Tin didn't In truth there is no reason to think this has any more chance of an Oscar nomination than any other far off in the future CBM. There are no details other than what the source is and who is directing. There is not even any idea what other films will be in contention. So this is based on nothing more than Spielberg's pedigree....7 nominations and 2 wins yes...but he's also had 25 or so films where he wasn't nominated, including some stinkers. Some would argue A History Of Violence (based on a graphic novel) and Dick Tracey (based on a Comic Strip) beat Deadpool to it. And those that argue against it...well RED, based on a comic book also beat it. Neither was it the first superhero movie nominated...The Incredibles got there first. Though not a first...Road To Perdition, Dark Knight and Deadpool all nominated before it

Hopefully, it will be better than his last fantasy/action flick, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
Best Picture prospects for that one were rather ... low.

I wasn't familiar at all with this Blackhawk comic book but it sounds dope after reading the synopsis . I could see this being a HUGE hit for WB / DC & of course Spielberg. I'm not too good at predicting the Oscars but with Spielberg directing , it could be a contender easily . Really looking forward to who is cast in this!

I kind of doubt it, but who needs the Oscar's anyway? Nothing they do really matters anymore.

It would be cool. Chris Nolan should present the award too.

Classic internet hive-mind/hipster thinking. Do you have a single original opinion not melded onto your mind by Red Letter Media or some other idiot? Maybe in sports, or -- oh, wait: Patriots fandom. Yikes. Um... do you -- are you a poseur about eating breakfast too? Do you literally eat Wheaties? Or... I mean... Let's nail it down: when you look in the mirror, do you have even the most fleeing impulse to cringe? I would hope so, but I'll bet not. Anyway, 2008 wants its "sick burn" back.

In name only, they didn't create the comic and the film will likely have no connection to DC, they'll probably downplay that DC own it.

Nevertheless, since the movie is about characters owned by DC, the movie will have to have a credit that says "Based on characters owned by DC Comics" or something similar to that.

Like V for Vendetta and Shazam, Blackhawk is a DC "buy in".

Unless Spielberg goes into autopilot for his other projects and pours all his Spielbergian magic into BLACKHAWK, I'd say unlikely. Tintin was his most fun movie in years but I didn't see it winning BEST PICTURE.
