I don't know how well know Black Canary would really be at this point Deb, I mean sure in theory the characters inclusion on Arrow should have increased her mainstream recognition but as Flash kind of poked fun at this week Black Canary has been so misused and hot potatoed around it's more confusing a IP than it is mainstream, I mean at this point can you imagine the normal discussing BC being in a movie after the clusterfúçk that is the characters history on Arrow?
Even before then she wasn't that well known given she was outside of the BOP series only got maybe 6 appearances on Smallville some of which were barely above cameo's and 3-4 proper appearances in JLU most her spots were again just cameos Young Justice I think has been her best prolonged exposure in the last 20 years outside of Arrow, which again probably done more harm than good seeing how Laurel & Black Canary/Siren have been some of the less well received parts of the show.
I think Sirens would do the best to hype people for a BOP film as Sirens you can sell on the IP's and on Robbie's star power, maybe even the performers you get for Ivy & Selena, it can be far more stand alone and just be a fun DC flick, in which you can give a Batgirl, Canary & Huntress each a 5 or 10 minute showcase like Diana got in BVS to hype people up for these characters then give them their own film where they can be the stars of their film.
I hope they keep the BOP film to Batgirl, Canary & Huntress or replace Huntress with someone else whatever, but keep it to 3 at a push 4 if you have a reason for it other than gotta get another character in here, as like with BVS, Suicide Squad & JL having too many characters you need to establish fucks with the movie, save the rest for a potential sequel or spin off's no need to jam it all in one film.
Just want to be clear though I'm not opposed to a BOP movie coming out first but I don't think a BOP film starring Robbie which she is helping produce and whose love of the BOP pitch helped get the director the job is the best way to do things, as I said I just don't want BOP to become a Margot Robbie vehicle, Sirens should be that or Suicide Squad 2 hell the Joker/Harley film can be that it shouldn't be BOP though, they deserve the spotlight for themselves because that way BOP can spin off into Batgirl, Canary or Huntress films which can bring in various other characters and so on and on...
I don't think the Black Canary's name would be any more damaged now than Nick Fury's was after the David Hasselhoff movie in the late 90s or Captain America after 'Captain America (1990)' and I don't remember that much about the 'Captain America' movie 'cause it has been a long time since I watched it and I only watched it once but I remember it being horrible and a lot of people calling it the worst superhero movie they ever seen when it first came out and they were able to fix that up when they made 'Captain America: The First Avenger' just over a decade later and then there is 'The Inhumans' TV show which has been very poorly received and appears to be cancelled by ABC but still Marvel are said to be working on a movie of it now so I don't think anything can be damaged when they can do that and there have been a lot of other comic books that have had poorly received first adaptions but been fixed later. The thing is with the Black Canary is we haven't seen the Black Canary on screen yet. Not the Black Canary that is one of the most highly skilled fighters in DC Comics that rescues people with a broken arm and leg and has a lot more superpowers than what she has on the show including the ability to fly and read minds and use her Canary Cry to launch herself into the sky, move objects like telekinesis and target specific people or targets from miles away. That should be the main difference between the movie version and the de-powered TV version and once they put Black Canary on the same level she is on in the 'Black Canary' and 'Birds of Prey' you have a very different powerful character who has defeated the likes of Solomon Grundy, Darkseid and The Demon Three on her own.
While the awful adaption of the 'Birds of Prey' TV got a lot of things wrong they did get some of the physic powers right which is what we never got in 'Arrow' 'cause they powered her down so much. In a movie like 'Birds of Prey' she will finally get a chance to shine and won't be as powered down as she has been in 'Arrow.' Personally I think they should have four members with Batgirl, Black Canary, the Huntress and Lady Blackhawk and add Lady Shiva to Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn and Catwoman's team 'cause she is one of the best female villains in DC comics and deserves a chance on screen. Lady Shiva has appeared in a number of 'Birds of Prey' comic books too and has a long history with Batgirl and Black Canary but I would have liked to have seen 'Batgirl' first before 'Birds of Prey' and 'Gotham City Sirens' and had 'Birds of Prey' as the sequel to 'Batgirl' with Black Canary and Strix (if they didn't use Lady Blackhawk) making their first appearances in 'Batgirl.' It will be interesting to see what they do with Nightwing 'cause they are in a very similar position in which they could make a 'Teen Titans' movie the sequel to 'Nightwing' if it is successful. I think Matt Reeves' 'The Batman' Trilogy's main focus should be on the Bat Family and establishing Red Robin, the Spoiler, Orphan, Batwoman, Bluebird and others into stars over the coarse of the movies and am happy we are finally getting proper Batman movies with the Bat Family.
