A poor man's Henry Fonda? I'd say, from roughly the same period, Dana Andrews somewhat qualified; and though he made the A list eventually, his star didn't last and he never became an icon. I'm nitpicking but in 1947 when they co-starred in DAISY KENYON Dana Andrews got billed above Henry Fonda.... of course Andrews was coming off BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES ie at his peak of stardom... earlier (1943's OX BOW INCIDENT) and later (1965's BATTLE OF THE BULGE) pairings saw Fonda get top billing. In IN HARMS WAY, also from 1965, they both supported Wayne and Kirk Douglas.

Clue = First name starts with a C, JUST like Philip Carey's last-name starts with a C. NOT Clint Eastwood, lol. Thanks for the additional clue. Maybe it will help others; I still got nuthin.'

Phil Carey reminds me a little of Jock Mahoney as a type, though his background was quite different. Both were very tall and rugged, handsome but not pretty. Both seemed comfortable in their masculinity, thus not overbearing.

Open to debate of course what exactly makes one the poor man's anything but now and then you see people called the poor man's etc..
Fred MacMurray was the poor man's Cary Grant. In the late 1930s and early 40s he's doing light romantic comedies, but could never really pull it off the way Grant could. And it would be hard to improve Double Indemnity, but you could. Imagine how much greater it would have been with Grant in the lead. And MacMurray's late career? Those Disney films like The Absent Minded Professor, and his TV series My Three Sons - all roles that Grant would have been ideal for if the studios had a chance in hell to get him.

James Franciscus - the poor man's Charlton Heston Paul Burke - the poor man's James Franciscus I can't help but link Franciscus to Heston in my mind. It was so obvious he was hired for the Planet of the Apes sequel because he looked so much like Heston. Never made the Burke connection in my mind though, until now. Yeah, he also looks like Franciscus.

He looks like Phil Hartman to me. Phil Carey totally reminds me of Phil Hartman. BTW, Hartman's death was one of the most sad celebrity deaths, such a funny man.

Some actors seem to be amalgamations. Like Christopher George seems to be a gene splice between Doug McClure and Chuck Connors. It's funny that you mentioned Doug McClure. He was the partial inspiration for Phil Hartman's Troy McClure character on The Simpsons. Hang on kids, this is where this whole thread gains some real symmetry. Troy McClure even played an astronaut in a Planet of the Apes kinda role once! How's that for bringing it all back around?
