What movies do you think got a lot of underserved hate? This can be movies you think are very underrated or movies that were praised by critics but subsequently received hate from audiences for being boring, too different or too artsy.
Movies that immediately come to mind are:
- Avatar (No it's not a masterpiece from a writing standpoint, but it's a technological marvel with the best 3D I've ever seen and it's still one of the best cinema experiences I've ever had. - Boyhood (Not a movie for everyone, so I can understand that people would be bored by it, but it was a very emotional movie for me.) - Gravity (I actually didn't like this movie when I first watched it, but for some reason I loved it the second time.) - Snowpiercer (If you want an completely understandable movie, you won't like Snowpiercer and you'll find a lot of plotholes in it. But I watched it as a allegory for society and I loved it.) - The Tree of Life (I do understand why some people won't like it, since it's definitely not a movie for everyone.)
Edit: I also enjoyed John Carter & King Kong (2005).

When I think of films that received undeserved hate, I think of the following examples:
"Man of Steel" sitting at 55% on Rotten Tomatoes and all the nit picking and criticisms. People comparing it to the Donner Superman, and it's actually closer to the comics.
When you have films such as "Thor 2" and "Ant-Man" ahead of "Man of Steel" critically, then something is wrong. It received way too much hate. I understand the criticisms of "Batman v Superman" and "Suicide Squad". Even though I like them, I can see where people's complaints are coming from. However, "Man of Steel" gets a lot of unfair criticism.
"Waterworld" I think this is just a misunderstood film. It's essentially "Mad Max" on water. However, there are a lot of concepts in this film that were ahead of it's time and misunderstood. Look, I'm not saying it's an Epic Masterpiece, but it's a damn solid film and got nit picked to death.
"Superman Returns" I know I'm on a Superman kick, but this film was actually cerebral. In a world where shared universes are like 1.5 hour TV serials, pure adrenaline action, non stop punching and exploding, alien invasion intent on world domination again, for the 19th time...
...Superman Returns was a thought provoking film that explores the psyche of the Man of Steel. He has to cope with idea that 'Maybe the world doesn't need me?" and "Lois has moved on" and so on and so forth. This would have been a perfect film for "The Death of Superman" making the world realize they did need Superman, and they kind of half-assed did a coma ending. But seriously, it's a FILM made for CINEMA and not a "Next time, on the Avengers" type shared universe film.

Twilight and Fifty Shades of Grey get a lot of hate, but they really aren't that bad. They are pretty entertaining, in their own way.

Superman Returns, for sure. It looks like a masterpiece next to most Comic Book films made now.

ALL movies on IMDb that have a 6.4/10 or less average that i have given at least a 7/10 (anything i score a 7 or higher makes it amongst my favorite movies which is currently 200 movies) which makes them the most underrated movies on IMDb if you ask me... -Good Kill (2014-2015) - 6.4/10 average -The Rover (2014) (probably my favorite Guy Pearce movie) -Terminator 3 (2003) (in fact, this is my 2nd favorite of the series behind the 1st movie. i honestly enjoy watching this more than Terminator 2 at this point.) -Last Man Standing (1996) (one of Bruce Willis best movies) -Young Adult (2011) - 6.3/10 average (easily Charlize Theron's best movie and within my Top 110 movies) -The American (2010) (within my Top 29 movies which makes it pretty much the most underrated movie for me that i think quite highly of. it's the atmosphere of the movie and Clooney's paranoid character that sells it. it's the best hitman/assassin themed movie in my mind but it's not surprising it flies off the radar given it's more low key approach) -Twister (1996) (a fun blockbuster. they don't make em like this anymore) -Assassins (1995) (the best thing affiliated with the Wachowski's(most known for Matrix movies). within my Top 110 movies.) -Adore (2013) - 6.2/10 average (i think some of the reason this works for me is that some of it's allure is doing stuff you should not be doing and it does it well) -London Boulevard (2010) (Colin Farrell's second best movie behind Phone Booth (2002)) -Room in Rome (2010) (this movie has the highest volume of general nudity/sex out there as it's pretty much softcore porn level except it's a legitimate movie) -Restraint (2008) (the only movie that Teresa Palmer appeared in of any real worth(Yes, even better than the recently praised movie from Mel Gibson called 'Hacksaw Ridge'. Hacksaw Ridge is good enough but nothing special (i gave it a 6/10(a mild Thumbs Up)) in my mind but i think a lot of people are a sucker for those hero types of movies which probably explains it's high praise.) -A Man Apart (2003) - 6.1/10 average (within my Top 62 movies which makes it amongst the most underrated in my mind. this movie along with Find Me Guilty (2006) are Vin Diesel's best movies and both fly off the radar it seems.) -S1m0ne (2002) (within my Top 62 movies which makes it amongst the most underrated in my mind.) -Some Kind of Beautiful (2014-2015) - 5.8/10 average (this would be the worst movie of everything i have listed here but it's still within my Top 200 movies) -Only God Forgives (2013) - 5.7/10 average (i am fairly confident this movies average rating would be higher had Drive (2011) not come before it as since everyone seemed to praise Drive there expectations were probably unrealistically high. i would say this would likely be a 6.x/10 range movie for the average has it not been for Drive coming before it. but this movie does seem to be a bit polarizing in general as i think it's the general style/atmosphere of the movie in where the movie is ultimately made or broke for you.) -Blame It on Rio (1984) (a good comedy/T&A type of movie from the 1980's that works. but basically it's mostly carried by Michael Caine and the "visuals" in the movie are a nice bonus ) -Drive Angry (2011) - 5.5/10 average (this is only one of four movies from Nicolas Cage i score a 7 or higher. it's my 3rd favorite Nicolas Cage movie behind Lord of War/The Family Man/Drive Angry/Face Off. also, it's my favorite Amber Heard movie/performance to as this is the movie ill personally remember her for.) -Spring Breakers (2012-2013) - 5.3/10 average (this movie seems to have a fair amount of polarizing opinions as some seem to dislike it a lot while others, like myself, think it's solid and quite underrated.) -Showgirls (1995) - 4.6/10 average (the only movie under a 5.0/10 that's of any real worth. it definitely gets too much hate as i am confident this movie is more liked/watched than the average rating makes it appear. it's almost like people rate it low just because everyone else seems to for whatever reason. i honestly think this movie should be AT LEAST high 5's MINIMUM for the average as it's simply not THAT bad as. in fact, this movie is within my Top 200 movies as i think a good portion of the reason it works is because of the director as if you had a lesser director doing this it could have easily been quite bad and i think the drama between Gershon/Berkley help sell it to. also, the T&A is a nice bonus as you don't really see many movies that have a more than usual amount of that, that end up being a good movie.) I have heard it did the 3D well (like it used the 3D well instead of it being there just to be there) but the way i see it... if a movie has to rely on 3D to sell the movie to the audience it's probably nothing special. but i guess since it left a impact on you because of the experience that might help boost it on your eyes but remove that aspect and have it seen like how typical movies are seen (i.e. in 2D) and it's nothing special. i have seen it in regular 2D at home and while it's alright enough to see once it has no re-watch appeal. hence, Thumbs Down. i have only seen it once so far and will eventually see it again. but with that said... it's nothing special in my mind. but i guess i can see why some like it as it's something a little different from most movies especially given how it's filmed over years so you can see them age etc. for me it was better on initial viewing than a re-watch (i.e. 6/10(a mild Thumbs Up) to a 5.5-6/10(barely a Thumbs Up)). i won't be surprised if the movie falls into Thumbs Down status once i get around to re-watching it again as it's barely Thumbs Up status for me currently (i.e. 5.5-6/10). it's main issue for me is that without Clooney on screen the movie gets a bit shaky/somewhat duller at times. i have seen Gravity on Dec 9th 2013 and then on Feb 16th 2014 so far. p.s. i think Bullock's best movie she starred in is... The Heat (2013) (6-6.5/10). appeared in would be... Speed (1994)(8.5-9/10). currently i mildly like the movie but i have only seen it once so far and ill probably see it again eventually. but i figure if i don't get around to seeing it within the next couple of years tops, ill likely just shift that 6/10(a mild Thumbs Up) back to a 5/10(Thumbs Down) because movies i won't re-watch cannot score above a 5/10 for me as a general rule.

One film that I find many people hate, yet for me it is one of my favorites of his, is Tarantino's DEATH PROOF-07'. I loved the characters and sassy smart alec dialog, Kurt Russell's cruel, yet pitiful and misogynist psycho, and the build up in the first half was great. The second part when the tables were turned, gave us one hell of a terrific car chase that doesn't let up and gives you no time for a breather. Second Death Proof. Say what you will, but Tarentino can write dialogue & keep you entertained, give him a dirty, used oldsmobile & he will make a fly cruiser out of that bucket.

On the topic of Tarantino, I also felt a lot of people hated on Jackie Brown when it was released. I had a similar reaction in that it just didn't seem to hit the lofty heights of Pulp Fiction or Reservoir Dogs. On further viewings, however, it really is quite brilliant. Great dialogue and fantastic performances from Grier, Jackson and Forster. Definitely an underrated gem.
The Hateful Eight as well doesn't get the recognition it deserves in my opinion. I've heard people say it was too long and boring but I disagree entirely. Probably my best ever cinema experience and my second favourite Tarantino movie after Pulp Fiction.
Batman Vs Superman another one I find people to be overcritical about. Not without it's fault and I really thing the extended version makes it a much more linear story. Ben Affleck's Batman allowed me to overlook most of it's shortcomings, this was also a fun cinema experience for me.

The Star Wars prequels Hey, that's the question you asked. The prequels definitely don't deserve the amount of hate that they are getting. And the hate has increased after the release of the pathetic "The Force Awakens".

The biggest mystery for me forever will be Spielberg's Hook. One of the most heart-felt, touching, adventurous movies ever made, with a legendary, unforgettable performance by Robin Williams - probably his best - just one of the best fantasy movies ever made, but few recognize it as such.

The Star Wars prequels Hey, that's the question you asked. True. I'm not a great Star Wars fan, but I enjoyed both trilogies and TFA. I can see, why some fans of the originals might dislike the prequels (and beside the final fight - I somewhat dislike the first one aswell) but they aren't super bad movies. They have some problems (Hayden Christensen as Anakin and the love story), but they get way too much hate. I actually really liked the 3rd one. Other things to come to my mind: Lost World: Jurassic park, which has a very low rating. I think this movie is great, with a few problems. Pirates of the Caribbean 2&3 are also excatly what they are supposed to be - fun action summer blockbusters. I had great fun with them. Event Horizon - great sci-fi horror, very creepy. The 13th warrior - was one of the biggest flops ever. I personally really liked it as a dark fantasy action movie. It's a shame that McTiernans longer, darker cut was never released

Haven't seen Tree of Life (started it and punted) or Boyhood. Enjoyed both Avatar and Gravity a lot. Snowpiercer didn't get enough hate as far as I'm concerned, but I think that's because I snobbily reject Bong doing it. I love his other films.

Spider-Man 3, while still the weakest of the trilogy, isn't as bad as people say it is. I quite enjoyed it.

Heaven's Gate (1980). I'm glad the director lived to see it being re-evaluated, reconsidered and even hailed as a masterpiece in some parts of the world.
