And most every other space based films, shows, books where conversing with multiple species is a common theme, and English is referred to as something else like speaking common or talking basic and shit.

I think there is a galaxy basic (that is not an Earth language). This is the language that they speak in the space based movies. You can see that Quill is wearing a universal translator behind his ear. Wasn't it only Quill talking to both the Guardians and the Earth heroes? Can't remember if any of the others talked to anyone on the other team.
