Well, some years ago, I read a list of the world-wide most recognizable music, symbols, etc. Superman's crest and the Batman signal/crest were 2 of the top 50 most-recognized symbols right up there with the Christian cross, medical caduceus, and danger sign. There were no Marvel characters listed in the top 50 symbols (granted, Captain America's probably just looks like a Pro-USA coaster, does Iron Man even have a symbol?), and the Darth Vader music was one of the most-recognized pieces of music the world-over.

DC HAD the most iconic characters, but if they continue on their current streak they might lose that prestige in the next few decades.

Nah, a dry spell won't evaporate a sea. They'll always have the Donner, Burton and Nolan films, Adam West, Superfriends and all the other cartoons. Spider-Man is still the most iconic guy at Marvel, him and Wolverine, Hulk and Captain America, but still not Iron Man. The movies increase awareness but don't really shake up the foundations. Comic book sales are even falling.

Ask grandma and grandpa who the most iconic superhero characters are and they are going to say Batman and Superman. Ask a group of people under the age of 50 the same question and I am not sure you would get the same consensus. Ask a group of people under the age of 30 and you definitely wouldn't get the same consensus. The times they are a changin'.

I agree that the Marvel characters creep in... definitely you'd get Spiderman, Wolverine, maybe even Iron Man and Deadpool because of their current movie popularity.
But even now Superman, Batman and the Justice League are mainstays. Every list I found on the web rates Batman as first most popular character, with Superman and Spiderman duking it out for 2nd place depending on which list you looked at. Those are always the top 3. Look it up yourself.
Even I did a poll here on IMDBV2 and guess what? Batman, Superman/Spiderman. Top females? Harley Quinn and Wonder Woman. Top villain? Joker
Kids may prefer Redbull or Mountain Dew, but they still respect the significance of Coca Cola.

Like I said, DC still has the most iconic characters AT PRESENT. Which probably won't last if they continue their current trend. Majority of the younger generation are already more familiar with Marvel characters than DC characters.

That article is like 4 years old. I'd say the Avengers have probably passed Batman by now.

DC has the most iconic symbols, but Marvel has the characters. DC's characters are more templates than actual characters. That's why we have so many interpretations of them. And why so many have the idea to create their own version of the character. The way they see the character.

Well that's because most of the MCU characters weren't as well-known as Spider-Man, Wolverine and Hulk and most had never been in live-action before, so their actors basically claimed them.
The icon vs individual character thing applies to Spider-Man too. He's still the most iconic Marvel character but the three movie versions are barely alike. Can you imagine Tobey Maguire's Peter tagging after other superheroes like an excited child? He was his own man through and through, and older from the start. Similarly, only Andrew Garfield's Peter was the only one to actively pursue a girl and keep the relationship going for some time instead of them falling for him.
