Armstrong made it pretty clear in his own words:
The planting of the flag was controversial in 1969. There was disagreement over whether a US or United Nations flag should be used. Armstrong said later: "In the end it was decided by Congress that this was a United States project. We were not going to make any territorial claim, but we were to let people know that we were here and put up a US flag.
They're planting a flag, not stealing the moon's unobtainium.

Wow, disappointing about Gosling. I always liked him, but that was a douche move.

Wow, disappointing about Gosling. I always liked him, but that was a douche move. He's one of my favorite actors, and still is. I've always found him likable and I thinks he chooses great movies to be in. But shit like this? I just don't understand it.

He either buys into a lot of globalism BS or has some kind of beef with the US. Ironic since it's our movie industry that made him famous.

It's exactly what I would expect from a hypocritical Hollywood douchebag liberal. It's hilarious, considering the political leanings that seem to dominate this site, so many of you are surprised.

In a thousand years, assuming something like human civilization still exists, the United States of America will likely no longer be around, or be around in a recognizable form. And at that point, people will regard the landing on the moon as a human accomplishment, not a national one. Gosling and Chazelle are being forward looking and mature about this issue. You whiners? Not so much.

Welp. Not seeing it now. What happened to telling people mind their own business and when did we give in to liberals and SJW’s? Fuck liberals and SJW’s is all I have to say. I agree fuck Gosling. It’s also no surprise since the director basically hates Trump.

WTF. smh. The moon landing was an American achievement. If the rest of the world wants to be a part of the celebration, they are certainly welcome to join, but to disrespect the USA by omitting the planting of the American flag ... please go fuck yourselves.
On the other hand, perhaps we should be grateful that they didn’t cast the Apollo astronauts as LGBT minorities.

I am not American and I dislike the near-worship of the American flag that we see in so many Hollywood movies but this is ridiculous! It's a real, historical, iconic moment and it is absurd not to show it.
I hope they are not going to change Armstrong's line "giant leap for MANkind" to "giant leap for HUMANkind", at least!

the more I think about it , the more this irks me . I mean, Gosling is a GREAT actor but his explanation is beyond idiotic here & seems highly out of touch. This mission was a US based mission & funded by US taxpayers. The US were the ones that won the space race at the time. These left leaning Hollyweird fucks are literally re writing history by NOT showing the USA flag plant. And before some of you jump on me for being some alt right troll, keep in mind, I'm not even an overly patriotic person . But this is flat out absurd & mind boggling to say the least. smh the flag plant was flat out an ICONIC & historical moment in history .

Is he going to bite the hand that feeds him? They didn't want to promote US nationalism because the corps hate nationalism that much--especially with Trump around.
In the 80s in Canada they made a big deal about Canada making the mechanical arm for the space shuttle.
God it was so lame. One had to be embarrassed in Canada because multiculturalism was in full swing and people were starting to notice that Canada's English identity was being watered down Soviet-style and when asked what great cultural contributions Canada made, some government tool would say: We made the arm for the space shuttle!
