so, modern family is going to kill off a "significant character" this season. Which one do you think its going to be?
Also whats significant? One of the truly main ones? Then I guess Jay would come in mind as he is old and it would be somewhat natural. But maybe thats too easy.
so who could it be?
I am ruling out the kids, as having a kid die off I think would be REALLY too drastic for a show of this type. If it WERE one of the kids I would say Ariel Winter as her story line has the least places to go now.
So unless they mean distantly significant (in which case DeeDee would be my guess, as Manys father is not that significant neither are Jays friends etc) I am thinking its going to be Mitch, because Cam is too funny to lose and Phill would Really struggle without Claire. I kinda wish it was Claire though as I find her annoying but that would destroy Phill. And losing Phill would mean losing the best TV dad there is.
What are your thoughts?

I'd be okay with it if they killed them all. Never found the show remotely funny.

I'm not sure. The too tight hipster suit or the fact that he is so fragile when his son excels at the hobbies they have in common. Like, grow up.

Toasted Cheese dirtypillows so I cant help but wonder what do you think about the relationship between Mitch and Cam as portrayed on the show, if you are familiar with it…

My guess is Jay, or Phil`s father or the mother of Claire and Mitchell. yeah, Jay is the most likely choice but Ed ONeil is so good in that role I wonder if they have the guts to kill him off especially since he has a small kid now. DeeDee is the one most people seem to bet on, everywhere. And that makes sense. But both her and Philss Dad dont seem big/important enough as characters to have them be called significant.

Like, grow up. interesting to be reminded how taste varies. i mean i know it does, but I would think Phill is the ideal man/husband/father for ALL women since thats how I see him. I couldnt event imagine someone would call him a snowlake of a father. to me that would be the guy I would want to have my kids with, certainly from the choice of men on the show. Phill all the way. And I dont say it because he is the best looking guy there, I am talking about his personality. Love it. If Him and Marshall Ericsson battled for my hand, I would have to think about it. I think Marshall would win eventually but I would have to think about it.

Toasted Cheese dirtypillows so I cant help but wonder what do you think about the relationship between Mitch and Cam as portrayed on the show, if you are familiar with it… Nora, I have seen this show about 6 or 7 times (when at a friend's house, he loves this show) and I can't say I liked it. I'm a sucker for the sitcoms from the 70s and early 80s. Anyway, I do remember the gay couple and I thought they were a little too precious and cutesy (not to the same degree as Will or especially Jack), but I was usually the only person in the room who was not laughing. Of the sitcoms I see today, there is the almost immediately familiarity and definite amount of viciousness, that actually makes me sad. Like I watched an episode of "Shamelessness" about two months ago, and I was like "Wait a minute, everybody is so awful to everybody else on this show! What happened to being a normal, decent person?" And if you or anybody else can recommend a newer show to me where the humor is more gentle and relatable and, yes, also funny, then please do! "The Golden Girls" is how far back I have to go for the last sitcom that I thought was really funny. And even then, it took a while because everybody was always so mean to Rose, and Sophia was just mean to everybody. I have to come to appreciate and enjoy and love the Rose character along with her sometimes very funny St. Olaf stories, and have done all my good will hunting that I'm gonna do with the Sophia character. She's definitely best in small doses. But then Dorothy is my favorite, anyway. All she has to do is give a look and then I'm choking with laughter. And Blanche is just great. Except the occasional guest star shot, I hardly ever find gay characters to be either funny, or even barely likeable. I guess the entertainment world and/or society is not ready for a thoroughly normalized gay person, who is not saddled with boring conventions or trends to make them palatable. Either that, or a ridiculously over the top character who is smarter and meaner and funnier than everybody in the audience, this is where you have to go back to the 70s "Hollywood Squares" and just watch it for Paul Lynde. Truly the last interesting, well-thought out and recognizable gay male spot character, IMO, was from the third season on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, where Phyllis' brother Ben comes to visit, and ends up clicking better with Rhoda than with Mary, much to Phyllis' horror. Now, THAT was plausible and entertaining and just funny and fresh enough to work really, really well. But, this was back in 1972!!!

The dog butler, maybe? It's too creepy! As long as it's not Phil, he's the only funny one, other than Sofia.

Toasted Cheese dirtypillows so I cant help but wonder what do you think about the relationship between Mitch and Cam as portrayed on the show, if you are familiar with it… I can't really comment on this Nora. I have only seen about 30mins of it in my entire life and the 2 gay characters appeared superficial and phony to me. The first thing that struck me about the show with the small amount that I had seen, was this amateurish feel about the presentation and acting. I was thinking what the f<>k is this shite when I was surfing through channels one night and then realized it was this popular Modern Family show that people were loving. I was rolling my . I don't even like Seinfeld.
Now, give me Will & Grace any day, or is that Jack & Karen... now thats really. interesting, I have never heard anyone say they would feel modern family is amateurish. i can see there being certain level of overacting yes but not by much compared to otjer sitcoms. odd that u dont mind will and grace then.. were u able to isentify a certain key to what makes u like a sitcom?.

Maybe the over-acting was what I was considering as amateurish, however, like most programs, one has to watch them continuously to get the feel of the show and the idiosyncrasies of the characters. I was a very, very, very, once off random viewer. It still seems a bit fake though. Now Will & Grace I suppose was all in the presentation and chemistry of the characters\actors. I found both Will and Jack cute and attractive, Debra Messing I found to be a very good actress and I loved watching her and Karen was just the best and funniest b!tch around. I guess it is all in the larger than life and self-deprecating and sarcastic humor that I found appealing. Jack was the anti-thesis to Will's more straight laced gay persona and it worked beautifully and that they were best buddies was sweet as well. They loved each other, without having to love each other sexually\romantically. They knew that a straight—pardon the pun—platonic relationship between them kept their connection with each other more rounded, alive and solid.
LOL. I'll never live it down...I get exactly what you're saying; I'm straight, but have been friends with several gay couples and honestly, the portrayal of them on this show is one of the biggest turnoffs about it for me. What I find depressing is that I almost get the feeling that, with a few rare exceptions as you note, this is about the closest thing mainstream television seems to be able to portray as a typical gay couple, with a typical familial relationship. I'm in favor of exactly that being depicted, but too much of the time, this is what we get instead--and from my own, admittedly limited experience, it rings false, and looks in some ways to still be tailored more to heterosexual notions of what gay couples are than what is true to life.
