That’s not the point. I’ve studied C.S. Lewis. I’ve read through a lot of C.S. Lewis’s stuff. (Now I’m tempted to go full Lloyd Bentsen ’88 and say, “C.S. Lewis was a friend of mine.” He wasn’t, but in college I took a class with one of the world’s leading Lewis experts.) You, Raptor, Sam, et al. (unless you’re Sam, which is probable) are using the Lewis quotation wrong. Sorry.

He kept trying to convert Lewis to Catholicism his [Tolkien’s] entire life, over and over again. It nearly ruined the friendship. One of the funniest Tolkien stories I know is when Vatican II introduced the changes to the liturgy and let the Mass be in the vernacular; Tolkien would go to Mass and scream out the responses in Latin, just to annoy everybody. And then he’d stare down anyone around him who tried to give him a handshake for the sign of peace. Anyway…

Not some fundamentalist nonsense, which is what Lewis was on about. Innit? Say what you want about Catholicism, and I have; at least it's an ethos!

There’s this Lewis essay, “On Stories.” It’s in Of Other Worlds, which I recommend for you, egon1982—among other reasons (mostly because it’s really good), because another one of the essays, “On Three Ways of Writing for Children,” has your favorite quotation in it. Anyway, point is, in “On Stories” Lewis writes at length about good storytelling. One of his examples is contrasting Haggard’s King Solomon’s Mines (also highly recommended) and the 1950 film version. I love the film version, but Lewis hated it—exactly for its childishness and lack of genuine stakes. Oops. Unless you understand Lewis’s point and context in that quotation, along with whence he’s deriving his paraphrase (1 Corinthians 13), you’re not going to get it. Sorry.

Admittedly, CSL was High Church Anglican, which is about as Catholic as you can get without swimming the Tiber. The American fundamentalists have co-opted him, which is rather unfortunate, as (judging from his comments on them at the end of his career) he had nearly nothing in common with them.
