HI all, Thanks for this site. I noticed that they seem to be purging threads already, getting a bunch of those "D'oh" (404) pages. Yeah, same

While I rarely posted there, the boards have given me and others a tremendous amount of trivia, knowledge, etc. so many times I'd see a show or movie, then go to their site and find the name of 'that song' or 'that actor' and oh gosh, tons of info. I scrolled past and ignored the trolls and found amazing people. It's just too bad.

I also think this has nothing to do with "unsavory" content on IMDB. I've been lurking on IMDB for 10+years, the amount of abuse that people hurl at each other has not increased in any way that I'm able to detect. If anything, in some areas the site seemed to be getting more civil...
I suspect this is because they aren't making much/any money from the forums. I've seen various theories floating around that the forum closure is due to people posting private content about celebrities on the message boards. Another theory is that the boards for new mainstream releases are being bombarded with negativity, and this might spill over into box office revenues. Admittedly, the boards for new movies are often awash with spammy/negative posts, but in my experience, IMDB generally has a great community. It might seem weird for me to say that, but the amount of rare information that could be found across the various message boards was amazing. Maybe it was because I mostly lurked niche boards, but the good/bad post ratio in my experience was at least 80-90% good posts...

I'm new here also, came over from the IMDB boards. This looks like a good place to discuss movies and actors, a nice resource to hear from other fans. Similar to the discussion and information resource that IMDB is/was.

Usually with trolls and nasty posters I don't take them seriously. By their abusive/abrasive posting it's usually clear that they don't want to discuss or engage in ideas, instead they probably want to insult and harass.

I don't mind subtle trolling like when someone is exposing someone else'e stupidity. That's usually entertaining. But spamming is just plain annoying.

If they were smart, they'd find a way to monetize the boards. Put ads off to the side, occasionally push sponsored content, etc. IMDb gets millions of views. They could afford proper mods or at least utilize dedicated volunteers. IMDb tried ads but almost all the accounts were anonymous so ad revenue was not high. Facebook has mostly accounts with real names, then ads can be targeted and FB makes lots of money. With low ad revenue IMDb could not afford to properly moderate the boards. So, they'll be gone in a little over 3 days. Imo at least, BB ;-)

The boards are closing because the Admins and moderators for that website were a basket of incompetents.

I'm on a few sites. I just like to be able to talk and goof around. I'm going to miss IMDB forums, and all the info on my favorites on there. Hell, why have actors and movies on favorites now if there is no board. There a sites I'm on I just like the fake you can add info and photo's to it. I like being able to add good pics over some of the bad ones sites get at times.

Of biblical proportions! I do think a majority of us will come here, effective Feb. 20th, once the boards are officially closed. As to why IMDb is disabling them...hmm. It seems like such an odd day to pick. They could have given everybody until the end of the month, and shut it down around the 1st of March. I'm going to hazard a guess and say the trolling became unmanageable. For example, when a celebrity died, somebody would create a "Jack Nicholson: I warned them!" post. That, and the off-topic threads didn't necessarily help. I think the mods on IMDb noticed, and decided it was for the best to permanently close the boards for good. I still stand behind my decision that it was an idiotic move on their part. I have no incentive to visit IMDb without any forums. It used to be fun to read certain discussions, dating all the way back to 2002. Now, we have to look at the web archives.

IMDB is owned by Amazon.com. Maybe the major reason has something to do with Amazon's own business plans, seeing that it has become a more active film business player with their entry into the content and distribution business for filmed entertainment? They already have readers reviews of movies, to which some form of discussions albeit puny happen. What's to prevent them from setting up a formal message board? That could lead to more business for Amazon ( Movies on Demand/DVDs, BluRays, CDs/ Online downloads/books & other merchandise tieups/gift certificates to see movies/etc).

The boards are closing because the Admins and moderators for that website were a basket of incompetents. I don't think IMDb had any actual mods or admins. It was all automated.

A lot of it is automated, but there are still actual people managing the boards (somewhat).

The problem is to establish a new community with the same importance as imdb. Most of the boards in the list will vanish in the next months (or become ghost-boards), like the majority of boards in general. If we do not agree on one board only its impossible to have an imdb 2.0. It will never be the same, but to have at least some of our favorite boards saved somewhere would be helpful. (for example- a board about a still running TV show)

Two reasons: 1. We don't pay to use the site. 2. Studios don't want people not liking their films, so they pay critics to give them high ratings. Normal people not liking their films is a crime, so they're trying to censor us.
