I came back today and saw imdb was closing. One of the members suggested this site, but didn't give me a reason.

It's only the forums which are closing, probably because moderating them competently would be too expensive.

People complain that the IMDb message boards are cancerous, but it's not THAT bad.

It was probably just about money. I see all sorts of posters on imdb expressing their opinion on why the boards are closing. It seems to come down to this: 'whatever side I'm on, their shutting it down because those other people are babies'.
I'll bet they just don't feel like paying for it anymore, whatever the cost.
And as much as I love those boards, and I certainly do?
I don't think we make up enough of a demographic to sway the decision.
That said? I wonder how much of the 'general population users', etc, lurked the boards for information. I think they'll take a hit.

Im so over the IMDb boards. The only thing that made it great was that so many people were over there and it was easy to get lost in discussion. If this place can maintain this level of buzz, I'll be happy

We got to get the word out about this place and a few others. If these places don't have enough people you can post something and hardly anyone sees it.

Once IMDb is finally down, there will be a huge migration.

Once IMDb is finally down, there will be a huge migration. Yes, but where? The problem I see with all the new alternates is none will be getting the majority of the old users. Will we end up so fragmented that all the alternates fail? Or am I just being negative?

You make a good point, but if at least there are places that people are going to and someone (already done) has a list of the places then you can make a common goal in the future This mad guy imdb2.freeforums.net/thread/1438/moviechat-another-alternative-archived-posts...has been busy scraping all the threads, kudos to him. Unfortunately the site is a bit of a let down Personally think my site is the best but then I'm biased But I'm sure there is room for a combination of something...

If this place can maintain this level of buzz, I'll be happy Some of us have worked over time to create provocative threads to accomplish just that! Now: I am very disturbed (but not offended) by the incongruency between your aka & avi. Couldn't yr display name be Buzz, WASP or Buzzy the Waspie? Either that or a cerulean avian avi? I'm all out of sorts here! My little lightning bug is incidental to my liking for cute things

It's nothing to do with political correctness or the alt-right. It's an old system that costs more to run that it brings in in advertising revenue, simple as that.

I was never quite under the impression that IMDB spam was bad. The posters were usually polite enough, and at most, rude yet not absolutely raging. Across most if not every IMDB forum I've seen, plenty of intelligent and relatable conversions have emerged, whether about films, music, actors and actresses, directors, or even politics (arguably the most heated of discussions for many, but I say let it exist). I'm kind of a regular to browsing 4chan and Reddit, and whatever has happened at IMDB is quite tame in comparison to some of the other things I've seen, from time to time.

The IMDb boards have almost all anonymous accounts. Advertisers want your real name and then track your preferences. Then advertisers can target ads specific to you. - This is what Facebook does. That's why FB makes so much money. Because of money we are encouraged to go on Facebook and now many websites require a Facebook login. That brings in more money. * Mostly anonymous IMDb board accounts brought in low amounts of advertising revenue. It was too expensive to moderate the boards. So, they are being deleted. Imo at least, BB ;-)

I enjoyed the mostly-uncensored atmosphere, personally. Most people were reasonable, anyway. You didn't see pornography posted on IMDB, unless in rare instances of posters-gone-feral, and if I recall, there was at least some moderation done to delete certain threads, although infrequent. Profane language was also uncommon. I think the uncivil behavior of IMDB members is overstated, likely to make a point that Facebook/Twitter/Instagram and the like are places IMDB expects to make money from user interaction.

I'd expect forum regulars are less likely than people who pop in and out to click on advertising, per page view at least. I've been posting on there for the last 12 years and I don't think I've clicked a single ad.

I did occasionally click on the links for film adverts, and they usually led to another page within IMDB itself, if I recall. I don't follow IMDB on Facebook or any other social media website, though.
