Tonight Katsura took her first steps towards being a lap cat. She walked across Catman a couple times and stopped a moment for a bit of petting.
She's also started talking more. She greets Catman when he enters her room, and the past couple nights she has even been at the door rather than up on her rafter. Quite a difference from the first few days.
As for Miko, she's taking this all in stride. She likes the new foods Catman is trying out to find what Katsura wants to eat. And she has made clear the pillow definitely belongs to her, but she does not mind if Catman shares a small bit of it.
Not quite sure what's up with Miko's fascination with Catman's slippers.

Have lost track of the story's plot … have Miko and Katsura interacted yet or just Catman and Kat ?

Have lost track of the story's plot … have Miko and Katsura interacted yet or just Catman and Kat ? Other than a few brief moments when Katsura was in her carrier and that encounter up in the rafters, they have not met. Until she's more acclimated, Katsura will stay in her room. Probably sometime next week, she'll be up to exploring the unfinished half of the basement. But no face-to-face with Miko for a while.

After some consideration, Catman decided that while Katsura is not ready to explore beyond her room, she and Miko should nonetheless meet. So after setting up the screens to prevent direct interaction, Catman opened up the door. He played with Katsura several minutes while calling Miko, but she did not come.
So Catman went upstairs and led Miko down using her fishing pole toy. Once on the landing, Miko spotted Katsura and hissed. For her part, Katsura simply sat quietly and watched Catman flick the toy bait about. Miko played with the toy for several minutes, pausing every now and then to hiss at growl at Katsura. She did not at any time act in an aggressive manner. Finally, she grabbed the bait and dragged the whole toy upstairs.
All in all, a good first interaction with neither cat acting in an overly aggressive manner. Katsura is calm yet interested in Miko, and Miko is all hiss and growl, much like when she first met Andrew. It took a long while for her to be less agitated by him so they could interact directly, and it was a full three months before Catman felt confident in letting her roam the house unsupervised.
Perhaps by the time Katsura is ready to explore beyond her room, Miko will be ready to accept her as a housemate.

Well, that was not the sort of adventure any cat wants to have.
Miko was playing by herself with her fishing toy, dragging it around and wrestling with the bait. As often happens, she got the string wrapped around her paw. When that has happened before, she just ran away until it came loose.
This time, however, she had been playing beneath a table, and she had gotten the string wrapped around the table legs, so when she tried to run away, the string around her paw pulled tight. The more she struggled, the tighter the string became. Had Catman not been there to cut her loose, she could have seriously injured herself.
Lesson learned. Fishing toys in the Cat household will no longer be something cats can play with without supervision.

My cats discover all new ways to use ordinary household products in dangerous, life-threatening ways, and how to push things off of shelves to see if the puppy will eat it or choke on it. It's like Romper Room here everyday.

This evening Katsura ventured out into the unexplored world of the unfinished part of the basement. At first she just stood in her room and peered out, but after Catman coaxed her out with her fishing pole toy, she cautiously ventured out. She kept retreating into her room, but eventually she made it out past the water heater and took a look at the litter boxes in the old shower stall. After about 20 minutes, she decided she'd had enough excitement and retreated to her room to lie down.
Catman let her work off her excess energy for a while with the fishing pole toy before opening the front door of the room by the stairs. Miko came down when called, and she cautiously approached the screens to peer in. This time she merely watched Katsura without hissing or growling. Katsura came over near the screens to play with a mouse toy. Miko watched this for a few minutes before excusing herself and going back upstairs.

Tonight Katsura spent 50 minutes exploring the unfinished portion of the basement and even made it all the way to the other door to the stairwell right next to the washer and dryer. She had to have a nice long bath after all that excitement.

Katsura has made two major accomplishments the past few days. First, she comes when Catman calls her name. Well, most of the time. But she does recognize and respond to her name, which bodes well for full house exploration. Second, she jumped onto Catman's lap and stayed a couple minutes. Unfortunately, she got overly exciting and started nipping at Catman's hands, so that ended the moment, but it was a good start.

This illustrates the difference in temperament between Miko and Katsura.
Miko was playing with the scratching post when it fell over. She responded by vigorously attacking it.
Katsura would have run for the rafters.
