Starts off well enough but once all the psychologists enter the picture it goes downhill badly. And other than the clown scene it isn't scary at all. Too bad. Great Goldsmith score though. Carries the movie really

Who had actual creative control over this one? I know Tobe Hooper is credited as the director, but I've heard Spielberg was pulling a lot of the strings.

I think it holds up well.
If the goal is to be scared then maybe not.

I don't know, the guy shaving his face off always scared the crap out of me. That and the swimming pool full of skeletons towards the end.

I think the original holds up just fine, but to each his own.

I gotta disagree. It's still a great movie and holds up very well.

It's a pretty solid horror flick. The dynamic between the family members carries the movie through its sillier moments. I found it refreshing that the family really didn't have any internal conflict with each other. Like the parents being divorced/separated, the kids being brats, that kind of thing. Just normal people.

I am not even sure what you mean, unless you haven't seen the movie since you were a kid or something.
The movie has never been very scary, but I don't need a horror movie to be scary in order to enjoy it. The movie has a creative story, characters I like and sympathize with and it has great atmosphere and is fun to watch.

Which begs the question: Are they being targeted for smoking pot or voting for Reagan?

Which begs the question: Are they being targeted for smoking pot or voting for Reagan? I agree that it stands up over time quite well, but when I re-watched it recently I must say I was shocked by the pot smoking parents. That was something I had completely forgotten and I was frankly surprised they put that scene in there.

Yeah absolutely. Also the fact that they lived in such a normal suburban neighborhood added a lot. Which begs the question: Are they being targeted for smoking pot or voting for Reagan? Probably for being pot smoking Reaganite Republicans? They didn't listen to Nancy and "JUST SAY NO!!!"

This is one of those movies I haven't seen since the 80s that I really need to re-watch. I loved it when it was released, I'm not sure if the past nearly 40 years gone by will change how I feel about it very much. It was fun then, I'd think the same would hold true now.

It holds up incredibly well. In fact, it's one of my favorite horror films. Yeah absolutely. Also the fact that they lived in such a normal suburban neighborhood added a lot. Which begs the question: Are they being targeted for smoking pot or voting for Reagan? They're being targeted for having the first house that was developed on top of a graveyard and having a young daughter whose life force can steer the souls lying in limbo into the afterlife. I assume the pot-smoking was a holdover from their liberal hippie days.

Judging by my big screen viewing a couple of years ago, some of the visual effects don't really hold up. But the face melting scene and most of the third act, still scary stuff. Side note: it says a lot where casual pot smoking probably wasn't the issue for the MPAA in 1982, regardless of the original "R" rating being overturned.

I disagree, Poltergeist holds up very well. The special effects are still top-notch, and it really delivered on the fright scenes. I guess my only problem with it is that it felt a bit too "Spielberg-ish" at times.

It holds up better than the remake and I like the remake.

I thought it was great as a 12 year old... When I came back to it at 20, it didn't seem so good. The Spielbergian touches are icky and there's that unappealing old bag that plays the psychic.
I bought a copy a few years back, but I haven't got to it again.
