If you're going by ordinary books, perhaps The Magician's Nephew. I wasn't super into all the Narnia books but that one had me hooked. For science fiction my favorite was probably Isaac Asimov's Nemesis or I Robot.

The Narnia books
I loved really old children's books, so: Enid Blyton Edith Nesbitt Malcolm Saville Arthur Ransome
My aunt used to work in a library and when they were going to throw away any old books, she would give them to me.

Misty of Chincoteague by Marguerite Henry (also her other "horse" books i.e. Sea Star, King of the Wind, Stormy etc,) I also loved The Secret Garden and the Nancy Drew mysteries, the Nancy Drew books I read were from the 1930's(the blue books with orange lettering on the cover)

Perhaps, 'The Twits' (1980) by Roald Dahl. I liked his books a lot and that one really struck me.
I also obsessively read 'Peanuts' & 'Garfield' books.

I saw a film of Tom's Midnight Garden on TV yesterday. It wasn't brilliant.
I remember watching a TV series of the same story when I was young.
Haven't read the book though.
