There is not one significant, meaningful game from last year that I remember Jason DeGrom pitching in, so I'm not sure how great he actually was in 2019.
I know the writers love him, he pitches in the largest market in sports, and he totally fits what "new baseball" is, so hey, I guess 11-9 is what constitutes the "best pitcher" in baseball is these days.
I would have voted for Jack Flaherty, but he wasn't even one of the "golden three". Out of the finalists, I would have given it to Scherzer.

Plus, the Mets were actually in playoff contention out of nowhere for the last two months of the season and deGrom was a huge part of that. Your memory be dammed!

Before the season started, I had him pegged as a dark horse Cy candidate, coming off of last year where he instantly flashed ace stuff but had command issues and gave up a ton of long balls. But man oh man is he good. I remember a few weeks ago you mentioned how good he was in the 2nd half and you were 100% right. I was on board, even saying that if he kept it up, he had a good shot at stealing the award. Alas. As for Ryu, at the time of your Flaherty thread/post from August or whenever it was, I still had Ryu as the frontrunner, even though he was coming off of several awful starts in August. His numbers in the 1st half were just so far and away better than anybody else's that it was his to lose. Then he was awful in August, I mean with an ERA over 7 bad. Then he got hurt. Then he came back and was OK. Then I think he got hurt again, came back and was great in 4 September starts, albeit with abbreviated innings as they were trying to get him right for the playoffs. If you look at his splits, his first half was brilliant across 17 starts, going 10-2 with a 1.73, 0.908, with a 9.9 K/W ratio. Just awesome. Then in the 2nd half, across 12 starts, he went 4-3, with a 3.18, 1.154 line and a 4.57 K/W ratio. Certainly good, but that falloff is what cost him in the end.

I don't want to look up the entire season's worth of mediocrity for the Mets bullpen, but I distinctly remember that at the All-Star Break, the Mets bullpen had blown 20 leads in the 7th inning or later. That's just the first half. 20 blown games. That's awful for any team over an entire season. This is why I always take deGrom's (and any starter's) win totals with a grain of salt, because so much of it depends on things that are 100% out of his control that it makes it misleading. Don't get me started on my Bob Welch rantings! Sorry, being a bit altered has me going on tangents. I held it together in my earlier post but now I'm faltering. But yeah, the bullpen fucked the team in it's ass all season long, except for the very end where they were only terrible, as opposed to historically, suicide-inducingly incompetent. You get the Edwin Diaz that is somewhere between 2018 and 2019 and suddenly the Mets 2020 season looks a lot brighter. If Jeurys Familia isn't the league LVP, then maybe we have something with him and Justin Wilson as a 7th/8th inning combo (Familia did look a little better after coming back from injury). If they go out and sign an everyman like Steve Cishek, then I'd be pretty happy about them being able to at least make the NL East interesting.

Surprised that deGrom won it but looking back nobody really ran away with it as a favorite like Verlander and Cole did in the AL. Ryu was a favorite for most of the season I think but I guess I have no issue with deGrom winning it. Caught me off guard as I wasn't aware he finished with that low of an ERA. Scherzer finishing 3rd seemed a bit too high for him as well. I would have voted for Flaherty and Soroka over him honestly.
