Things to consider Ra's al Ghul is Arabic for 'The Demon's Head.' In Arabic it's pronounced Rahs. This is how it's pronounced in Nolan's movies. Creator, Julius Schwartz, says he intended it to be the Hebrew pronunciation *Reysh*. Now before you say 'It's Arabic who cares about Hebrew...' They're both Central Semitic languages. There is a reasoning for Arabic pronunciation becoming Hebrew, their alphabets... www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8gIOASNCU4The first time the character appeared in a medium with audio was in Batman: The Animated Series, in an episode called 'Off Balance' though I don't believe his name was spoken in that episode, he only appeared at the end talking to Talia in a video chat (Honestly I only skimmed through it on dailymotion). His next appearance was in the two-parter The Demon's Quest, here he (voiced by David Warner) infiltrates the Batcave and meets Bruce Kevin Conroy - voice of Bruce Wayne for more than 20 years, said it the same way, here in a clip from The Demon's Quest part 2, 1993 Same actor, 2011's Batman: Arkham City So how do you say it? Like the character's creator, like the definitive voice of Bruce Wayne, and original portrayer of the character? Or some stupid way?

primeone Why do you say it that wrong way? @zackbop What's the difference between ah and aw? Semi-related, do you pronounce pin and pen the same? A lot of people do, basically this

A lot of people do, basically this I pronounce pin and pen differently. I guess I'm getting tripped up with the "ah" and "o" distinction, as I would pronounce box and bahx more or less the same. Unless the distinction is with the "s" and the "zz."

I clearly explained that already You said you said it the same wrong way Bale does, you didn't say why. Is it just because that's how Bale and Neeson said it? Are you just...stuck saying it the first way you heard it?

I say it the way it was said in the Dark Knight trilogy.
Rozz.
Are you calling the Dark Knight trilogy stupid?
I don't give a flying fuck how cartoons say it. I'll never watch them.

I don't give a flying fuck how cartoons say it. I'll never watch them. Not 'stupid' just wrong on this particular point The creator of the damn character's concept/name says it's the way the cartoons say it. He's more of an authority on it than Nolan or Bale or Neeson. What about the Arkham games? Those are pretty damn good, even if you're not generally a gamer. Just think about the cartoons for a sec. Where did Bruce (Kevin Conroy) and Ra's (David Warner) get the pronunciation Reysh? The script and/or director - the director would have got it from the writer. Who wrote the first episode where the name was spoken? Dennis O'Neil. If you look up Ra's al Ghul on wikipedia, it says Created by Julius Schwartz (concept/name) Dennis O'Neil (writer) Neal Adams (artist)

I'm really not invested enough to care where Kevin Conroy got his pronunciation. I'm 100% going with the film pronunciation and I'm not being rude, but I just don't care how he or Warner or O'Neil came up with Reysh.

What makes you assume the movies are 'right'? Don't you think Nolan/Goyer could maybe have not done a lot of research on it? They did go with the more intuitive pronunciation (it used to be written with a macron over the a)...meanwhile an episode written by the character's co-creator has it pronounced Reysh. Why is Nolan more correct than the character's creators?

I'm not assuming they're right. I just say it how the movie said it and I don't care about it beyond that. I see. So 2 guy's create a character, say the name is pronounced a certain way, then someone else makes a movie with said character years later and have the name pronounced incorrectly, and because that's the first time you heard of the character you would rather stick with the wrong way than learn something and switch to the originally intended way?

Perhaps it's time to reveal that I don't care about DC, so I'm not interested in the way the creators said it or anything else about DC. I'm 100% a Marvel guy and always have been since I first became interested in comics way back in the early 90's. I respect the first 2 Nolan films, but not the last, as being good films. So I pronounce it how they do. You are welcome to pronounce is Raysh, or Raz, or Roz, or captain shithead. Whatever you like.

I'm going to keep saying Rozz if that's cool. I notice a lot of people are quite stubborn on this issue. They're like, 'Ah I don't care what the creators say, what the first actor to play the character said, what THE voice of Bruce Wayne says, I first heard it this other way and I'm sticking to it because my mind is just that inflexible!'
