As part of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s unveiling of their new DC Universe Chapter One, “Gods and Monsters”, the twosome announced theatrical release dates for the Gunn penned Superman Legacy, that being July 11, 2025 and Matt Reeves’ DC else-world Batman II which is Oct. 3, 2025. Gunn and Safran declared that 2025 will be a big year for their new DC universe. Related Story James Gunn & Peter Safran Unveil Big DC Plan With New Movies For Batman & Robin, ‘Swamp Thing’, ‘The Authority’; ‘Lanterns’ TV Series & More Warners already had both dates on hold on the theatrical release calendar for untitled DC movies. No other studios have booked titles against them at this point in time. No director yet on Gunn’s Superman Legacy, through Safran hinted yesterday he’d like the Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker to helm. “This is really the start of the DCU,” Safran called the feature.
“It’s not an origins story, it focuses on Superman’s balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. He’s the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, he’s kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old fashioned,” says Safran. As previously announced a new actor will be cast for the role of the Man of Steel.
Reeves’ Batman 2 screenplay is currently in the works. Gunn and Safran have their own Batman movie planned, The Brave and the Bold, which will be the Dark Knight’s entree to their new DC universe. No director, writers or actors attached at this time. Brave and the Bold will tell the story of Bruce Wayne and the spitfire, renegade son he didn’t know he had, Damien Wayne, who takes on the alias of Robin.

Yep, that announcement was as bad as expected. More generic superhero TV shows too.

The goal is to have two movies, and two HBO Max shows released per year. The list of movies and TV shows is as follows. Movies: Superman: Legacy: Gunn is currently writing the screenplay, and Safran is hopeful the filmmaker will also direct the DC movie. Set to come out on July 11, 2025, Superman: Legacy will not be an origin story but will focus on Clark's struggle to balance his superhero life with his human one. The story will also explore Superman being a beacon of kindness in a world that believes kindness is old-fashioned.
The Authority: Gunn is currently outlining the film, which will be based on Wildstorm characters. The DC imprint will be brought into the main universe with the live-action movie. According to DC Studios, The Authority explores antiheroes who have good intentions while having to go to extremes due to how broken the world is.
The Brave and the Bold: This will be a Batman and Robin story with a new star set to play the Dark Knight. Robert Pattinson and Ben Affleck will, therefore not be starring in this film. Based on Grant Morrison's Batman run, the story sees Bruce discovering that Damian Wayne is his son. Taught to be an assassin, Bruce must now raise Damian under his wing. The Brave and the Bold will also feature other members of the Bat-family. It was not revealed if they have decided which actors will play them, or if DC Studios will even use stars that have been used previously.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow: The Girl of Steel is getting her own solo movie, which will be based on Tom King’s recent DC run as he is an architect of the project too. While Superman was raised on Earth with kind parents, Supergirl stayed on a piece of Krypton that drifted off. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will explore her life as she was forced to see many loved ones die tragically.
Swamp Thing: DC Studios is working on a movie that explores the dark origin story of Swamp Thing.
Television Shows:
Creature Commandos: This was the only animated series announced as part of the slate. Gunn has already written seven episodes for the series. Creature Commandos will center Rick Flagg Sr. (who is set to appear elsewhere in live-action, portrayed by his voice actor), Nina Mazursky, Doctor Phosphorus, Eric Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein (who is the protagonist), G.I. Robot, and Weasel.
Waller: The previously announced Amanda Waller spinoff series is moving forward with Viola Davis still set to star. The show will take place between Peacemaker seasons 1 and 2. This is because Gunn doesn't have time for Peacemaker right now. Doom Patrol executive producer Jeremy Carver and Watchmen scribe Christal Henry are heading up the series.
Lanterns: While it's unclear if this is meant to be Greg Berlanti's Green Lantern TV show, Lanterns will center on Hal Jordan and John Stewart. According to DC Studios, it’s a detective mystery with the Green Lanterns serving as super cops on precinct Earth. Lanterns will lead into an overall story about an ancient horror while weaving between movies and DC TV shows.
Paradise Lost: This is a Wonder Woman prequel series in the style of Game of Thrones, focusing on the origin of Themyscira before Diana Prince's time. Paradise Lost will explore how the political game that is played on Themyscira and what a society of women do in order to gain power.
Booster Gold: A series focusing on the future tech superhero with imposter syndrome is in the works. DC Studios are currently speaking to an unspecified actor to play the titular role.

So they are doing TWO Batman series at once? That’s surprising. I really don’t see how that’s going to play out without one taking audiences away from the other. I’ll be happy to see it work though. I hope Gunn’s version is more surreal and comic booky to contrast the Reevesverse.
Why Damian Wayne though? They should start with the other Robins.

Shazam 2, The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman 2 are a part of the DCU (which is replacing the DCEU)? Did I hear that right? He's ignoring his own stuff (Peacemaker and The Suicide Squad)?

My guess is they’re just not canceling projects they’ve dumped a ton of money into. Why they didn’t announce yet that Ezra is out as Flash… they’re waiting until the box office money is in.

Miller is definitely out. And Aquaman 2 will likely be Mamao’s last. They’ll almost certainly reboot them and Wonder Woman in the near future. They’re not going to dwell on that right now though, which is smart.

I'm not sure they can pull off a believable Batman in a live action JL movie. He seemed outclassed in JL.

Why in God’s name would they make a Batman movie in the DCU while the Matt Reeves Batverse is still going on?

The character loses everything that makes him interesting when he’s taken out of the context of his own mythology.

The Justice League TV show did a good job of working in Batman, and I can sort of see him working with Superman—one bit of science fiction in an otherwise relatively realistic universe—but in general, yeah, the character works best without the sci-fi/superhuman stuff. (Yes, I know realistic is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that sentence.)

I know they were going to release all the remaining DCEU movies, but thought it was going to die off. That clip makes it sound like he's including them.

Why in God’s name would they make a Batman movie in the DCU while the Matt Reeves Batverse is still going on? They're not going to make a shared universe without their biggest draw.

I'm not against the idea - I was a fan JLU cartoon - it just has to look believable/not make him useless. If Black Widow and Hawkeye can be in the big battles, so can Batman.
