I plan to go through the directors you have asked us to rate movies by and watch more movies from them. Normally I have a specific way of picking the horror movies to watch, because I am obsessive in the way I choose movies to watch. I too am planning a director themed month. Gonna round out the careers of the big four (Craven, Carpenter, Hooper, Romero), and dip into some prestige filmmakers like Altman who made horror movies I never heard of. Friedkin and De Palma also have a few I haven't seen. On the back burner, I was thinking of catching up on trash sequels I've avoided. I'll already be watching Hills Have Eyes II to complete Craven. There's also stuff like Jaws 4 and Exorcist II I've never seen. Interesting touch regarding prestige directors who dipped their toes in the genre. I was thinking about re-watching Oliver Stone’s two cracks at the beginning of his career. Picked up a copy of ‘The Hand’ recently and ‘Seizure’ is a film I want to rewatch again.

So, to clarify the challenge 'rules'. 31 horror filums. 14 must be first time watches. Filums must be minimum 60 minutes long. Mini series e.g. Stephen King's Rose Red count, but the whole series only counts as 1 filum. That's how I remember it anyway... Is that correct?

I've heard The Fourth Man (Verhoeven) and Benny's Video (Haneke) described as horror so I'll try to check those out. Someone somewhere said Dreams is the closest Kurosawa came to horror but that seems like a huge stretch.

The thing is, I didn't think I would participate this year. I just wasn't in the right mood. I felt burned out, a bit like a vampire, who having lived for thousands of years has gotten tired of life and everything. But now that October is approaching somehow my taste for horror has been awakened again. So yeah, I guess I'll give it a try.

Still I agree it would be a stretch to classify it so. Another one you could add is John Huston’s 1980 film Phobia.

But there’s something about October and the lead up to Halloween. But glad to see you’re motivated to try, and join the fun. Curious to see how this challenge plays out numbers wise. Just hope we get a good turn out.

Turns out that Altman movie Images is on Tubi. I've got it watchlisted and saving it for the Challenge.

I have a large collection of horror DVDs and Blu Rays that I'm eager to watch. Many have never been watched before. Others I haven't seen in years and years. But I don't stand a chance of seeing all of them. In fact, I know I won't get round to seeing most. But I do at least want to watch some of them this year. Most years I end up delving into horror movies on Youtube and watching everything but the movies I had originally intended to see. I must try to change that this year or my hypothetical descendants will be the ones checking out those movies when I join the legions of the undead.

Any people doing any themes next month with their viewings habits, or simply going by their moods? I might squeeze in a couple franchises. Definitely Scream, as I still need to see 5 & 6. And curious to see how 3 & 4 standup. No real themes planned, (though I like will have an Asian Horror marathon at some point) but I'm going to try to do 31 first time views this year.

I've since found out John McTiernan's debut was horror (Nomads), and Lars Von Trier had an early one called Epidemic which sounds timely. On that note, I might finally watch Antichrist, which I've avoided because I'm not a fan of extreme violence, especially toward the genitals.

As I will mostly be busy next month, I don't see myself in completing the challenge this year, for real this time (I made the same assumption in other years but I managed to be successful). But I still want to participate just to have a bit of participation history to compare years. Got loads of films on my list including ones I missed out on from the previous OHC so it isn't like I have nothing to work with.

The Hand is a fun B-movie with Michael Caine being the main reason is works as well as it does. Benny's Video and The Fourth Man are a stretch as far as I remember. They are more of psychological thrillers. Then again we don't exactly agree about The Silence of the Lambs either. Dreams has a few segments that can be considered horror, but overall I would not consider it a horror movie. The Keep is alright until the last act.

That movie is more violent than AntiChrist, just no genital mutilation in the former.

Besides that and Jaws 4 (which I was eyeing for my secondary theme of completing franchises, although it seems like I'm already gonna have my hands full with the director one), I was thinking about doing Irwin Allen's The Swarm. Heard it's wretched, but Caine vs killer bees should at least be funny bad, right?

I didn’t dislike it, because I thought there were a few oddball moments. However while the concept is creative, Stone’s execution isn’t. It’s rough. But I guess a lot of people had your same opinion of his debut, especially producers/studios since Stone didn’t make a film again until 6-7 years later. Always had a soft spot for ‘The Keep’. All the stuff that was going on behind the scenes, which soured Mann on the final product, I find just as interesting as the film itself. It did make me seek out the novel, and that’s one of my favourite reads.

Rather it’s languid and everyone is slumming it.
